Just wondering-is the anschutz 1712 MSR legal for hunter class rimfire? Specifically, is the factory 1712 MSR tapered (and therefore legal), or does it need to be rebarrelled with tapered barrel to satisfy rule 3.1.1(e)? thanks

Let me follow up my own question: the anschutz catalog lists several rifles, based on the 54 action:

Several are HB, or "heavy barrel." Presumably, these are the nontapered, bull barrels that are prohibited in hunter class. The MSR 1712 is NOT listed as HB.

BUT, I'm told it's not a legal barrel for hunter class??

hopefully this is a simple answer... no taper = not legal. Taper = legal. not attempting to diminish your question, just give you an easy answer. and yes, rebarreling solves the problem. don't worry about how much taper. as long as it looks like a hunter it is a hunter.

Well, put another way-there has to be people shooting hunter class with the 1712 MSR factory barrel. Anyone been challenged on it? Anyone on rule committee approve the factory barrel? I don't have a barrel to measure sorry

I measured my 1712 barrel at two places. At the end of the forearm it's .735. At the muzzle it is .710. There are quite a few 1712's that are shot at the Nationals including mine. Don't worry, you'll never see one of those challenged because they fit all rules for hunter. Buy one, and shoot it both ways. You won't be sorry. Mine shoots as well as my 54 MS.

The 1712 barrel tapers. Not much, but enough to meet the rule. That was the whole idea of the rifle...give the shooter everything the rules allow.

It seems like the 1712 is approaching 1/2 market share on any given "big match" in the hunter div (if not both ways). It's legal as the others have mentioned. The rifle has almost "taken over" the sport in the last year.... IMOHO

The 1712 is hunter class legal. Some folks have a heck of a time making weight.

CZ 452 Varmint is also legal because the barrel is tapered.

Hi Guys,

Can anyone tell us what the specs of the 1712 MSR are please ?

Weight / barrel taper (action to muzzle) / barrel length / stock (McMillan?)

It does not seem to be advertised anywhere, neither is it in any catalogue.

So who is selling/marketing them ?

I use a factory 1712 FWT which is a Hunter/Sporter, and manufactured to make a 3.5kg weight limit (that's 7lb 11 ozs) with it's shorter barrel, no sights, and it's (black) McMillan stock, (and single stage trigger), plus a reasonable scope and mounts.

I have a 1712 bbld action on hand that just came out of the factory box -- brand new, unfired and untouched by human hands! (Unfortunately, it's not mine!) lol

Bbl lgth: 22"
Bbl dia @ breech just fwd of the receiver ring: .986" (Actually, that's just fwd of the .15"-thick recoil lug.)
Bbl dia @ muzzle: .705"

I don't have a scale available to weigh it.

AFAIK, the 1712 FWT is the plastic stock version and the wood is the plain old 1712. (I might be wrong about that.)
Also, AFAIK the 1712s currently available differ from the 1710s only in the bbl. The 1710 bbl is 24" and comes with sights -- at least Neal Stepp tells me that he can get the 1710s only with sights. (The 1712s come bare bbl.)

The picture is a little clearer.

The Anschutz site gives;

the 1712 as 3.3kg/7.28 lbs 104cm/40.94 OAL no sights

the 1710D as 2.4/7.5 107.5cm OAL with sights

and 1710DHvyBarrel as 3.6kg/7.94lbs 107.5cm OAL no sights

I have done a bit of cursory measurement of my original FWT barrel;

.980 at fwd of recoil lug, .730 at end of stock, and .665 at muzzle,

so it appears that the factory 1712 is just a FWT with the wood roll over comb stock, and two stage trigger, (optional ?) and not even close to a Bull-Barrel.

Unless someone is providing a 1710 version with a shorter Heavy Barrel, (which is only marginally 'varmint' tapered !), I can't see that there would be any problem with a 1712 conforming to the latest NRA Hunter rules,
other than it struggling to make weight.
