Someone talked me out of my 30-40. Now I have to do it again. The local gunsmith I had been using for rechambering my Handis just raised his price from $150.00 to $200.00. I didn't mind $150, because I beat the shipping two ways and I was dealing with someone local I could go see if there was a problem. But, at the new price I'll start looking for an alternative. I know Wayne in Oregon does good work, but he is not available right now, and last quote I got from him was also $200.00, plus of course shipping. I just think this is a little high when they don't have to unscrew a barrel, or even remove an action from a stock. Any suggestions? If this is going to be the "going" price everywhere from now on, O.K., I'll shut up and just dig a little deeper in my pockets. Thanks for anything you can share.

Trotter,I hate to hijack a thread but. Was that a Handi you had done to 17 Rem? And did you use a 17HMR barrel for the rechamber?

Gutshot: I used a 17 Mach2 barrel however either would work fine. A little work on the extractor and I was in business, it shot extremely well, at least in the horizontal mode, it would do an honest inch horziontal at 200 yards, however I could never fix the vertical stringing which was about 3 inches at 100 yards. I just don't have the time to figure it out, so I sold it, someone will get a really nice shooting handi when they solve the vertical problem. I also had the barrel turned down a little so it wasn't too heavy, re-blued etc, I probably had near $350.00 in it by the time I was done, but it would have been cheap if I had just done the re-chamber. I had the same guy do a barrel for my Savage 10 in 17 Remington also, I know that one will shoot. I ordered a barrel for the handi RF donor frame in 22 Mag to use for Coyotes when only a rimfire is legal, so I still have one handi. Larry

$200 for a simple rechambering job? That's highway robbery.

$50 is way more like it.

My local guy will do a handi for $25 if he has the reamer in his tool crib.

Ron Smith did my rebore Job from 223 to 243 and chamber to the 6x47 for $250 Can. Of course he had the reamer.

$75 plus reamer rental plus one way shipping in the US
$ 150 should be more than enough. But don't forget gun smith are poor and need to malke a buck when they can.

Wally, are you sure that the $200 was for just a rechamber job?

I seem to remember that Quick and Mac had their tubes rebored and chambered up for $250?

Rebore+rechambers are $300 from Wayne. Didn't have him do just a rechamber, but I paid another local smith $135 for the 45-120 rechambering before I knew about Wayne.

Mike: I'm sure. We discussed it in length. Last one he did for me was probably 10 years ago, and ran $100.00. During the last couple years I mentioned doing a 303 Bri and he mentioned he had the reamers, and quoted me $150.00 This last week-end we had the gun show here in Great Falls, and he said their price had just gone up to $200.00. So I'll go elsewhere.

Mike: If a qualified smith would do it for $50.00 a person could swollow the $35-40 shipping and never look back. (Hay, I will be on the coast for a business meeting near the end of March. Where is this Mercantile?)

My 223 Ultra barrel arrived today and as soon as Wayne is done moving, it will be going out to him for a rebore to 375 Winchester. It's going to be a hoot. I ordered a 38-55 ejector at the same time so all he has to do is widen the slot a bit and drop it in.

Problem solved. Found a well established gunsmithing shop (Capital Sporting Goods, Helena, MT) just 89 miles from here that rechambers Handis for $100.00. Will drop off my 30-30 Monday. Will keep you posted how it comes out. Thank you for your inputs.
