MOA-Minute of Angle
« on: January 23, 2006, 12:04:51 AM »
I don't really understand what this means and what it means when you say that a your rifle is shooting sub MOA.  Can someone please explain this in simple terms?  I read an article on the net and I really did not understand it.  Thanks.

Cookieman: The way I was told and always took it was that basically MOA is a one inch group at 100yds., a two inch group at 200 yds and so on. Someone will probably want ot explain angle of dispersal (SP) and wheather you're facing north or south, uphill or down.

MOA was explained in a sticky at one time I believe but may be gone now.
Anyway, I'll try to explain it clearly.   You probably all ready know that there are 360 degrees in a full circle.  If you were to look at a good compass you would see that it is devided up into 360 degrees with a little line indicating each degree.   If you were to extend the degree lines straight out from the center of the compass, at 100 yards the distance between any two of the degree lines would be aproximately 1 inch.  I say aproximately because the distance is not  exactly 1 inch (I don't recall the exact measurment) but is near enough that most folks call 1 inch groups at 100 yards 1 MOA.   Hope this helped.

I meant to say any two adjacent degree lines in the above post. Sorry, having trouble with the edit function this morning.

Not quite Brett. A degree contains 60 minutes and each minute contains 60 seconds just like on a clock. So 1/60 of a degree equals one minute and one minute of angle is a wee tad over 1" at 100 yards. Not enough over to be of concern in shooting.

So it is in simplistic terms 1" at 100, 2" at 200, etc.

Good reading and a good memory refresher. How do you dig up all this stuff. It is easy enough to do on a calculator with functions. By the way the MS scinetific calculater is right at your finger tips. It is so handy with only a click away.

Did you read about the mil dot system in Sightron scopes. The are not really mil dot spacings, they made up there own mil dot system only it is not mil dot.

Why would they do something like that?

a minute of angle is 1.046" at 100 yards
The single most definitive publication on shooting "any rifle" is the:
"CHAMPION RIFLE SCOREBOOK"
E.F. [Tod] Sloan, Colonel USA., Ret'd.
Distinguished RifleMan-Natrional Rifle Champion 1931
Director of Civilian Marksmanship, 1945-47
contact E.F. Sloan,2502 Goodwin Avenue.,
RedwoodCity California, 94061
All the principles of MOA are laid out for rifle marksmanship in an easy to read manner without getting into "inside baseball" talk.
The reader is taken all the way through MOA, calculating MOA for extended yardage, reading wind, mirage, elevation, trigger squeeze and NPA [Natural Point of Aim]
This "scorebook" is in virtually every shooting kit for the Armed Forces shooting teams.  I refer to it on a regular basis at the range.
It is  readily available to civilians
Read it, Learn it, Love it; it is addictive

The tech stuff will take more reading for me, but, I got enough to know that when I read "sub MOA"  that means it shoots real good.  I will have to study it a bit.  But, YEAH, I think I got it.  Thanks guys.

Correct boss.  It's been a while since I've had to think in turms of degrees, minutes and seconds.  In my carpentry work degrees are near enough and it's been years since I've done any real navigation where I had to break it down to degrees and minutes.   And like you said simply saying MOA = 1 inch @ 100 yrds etc. is good enough for shootin'.

MOA= middle of animal.  If you can shoot a critter in the boiler room then that is MOA!!! Different folks have differing lengths of MOA.

Thats my story and I'm stickin' to it...........
