I followed the break-in procedure listed under sticky faq's.  I'm very pleased with the results.  This is a 243S43 with an older Redfield Widefield TV style 4X scope.  The arrangement is very sweet!

I'm shooting the cheap Remington Express 100 gr. 243W3 I think is the number on the box.  I cleaned it after every shot for the first 20 shots.  Then I cleaned it after every third shot for the next 20.  I used the J-B paste on it first of course according to the faq break-in before firing it.  Next I'll be using the foam to check for copper fouling.  I'm so pleased with this gun I can't hardly take it.  I haven't checked it for groups yet except at 50 yards.  Nice and tight at close range.

Break-In with that method would take some serious time and effort to do.  How much time does a guy need to block out to acheive such a thing.

A complete cleaning/polishing session is gonna take you  2-3 hrs minimum. See the FAQ for details.

For mine..it will depend on how many tight spots I find initially, I've gone back and done another complete lapping on 1 of them after shooting a box of factory in  it.I use a extreamly tight combo of oversized mop & patches, and a heavy duty 1 pc. stainless rod.

Mac:  Which one piece cleaning rod would you use on your own new .243 Handi if you were to buy one today?

The J-B bore cleaning compound (blue print on jar) is okay to do lapping with is my understanding.  I see J-B also has a product called Bore Bright.  I take it this is a finer grade of polishing compound?  I appreciate your description Mac as to  feeling the rod for uniformity as it glides up and down the barrel.
I'll pay closer attention to this.

Anyone have a favorite lapping compound that is safe to use?

I've used several products for bore polishing/lapping. JB non-embedding bore compound as well as Bore Bright which appears to be jeweler's rouge both work fine. I've also used Flitz, USP Paste, Maas and Simichrome. Use what you have or what you can get. The main thing is to make sure the rod doesn't come in contact with the bore, even with mild abrasives like these, rod contact in the throat or muzzle can cause damage, so use a good bore guide.

I have their 3pc rod and have used their one pc rod a few times..and really like it how they feel...http://www.proshotproducts.com/page3.html   When ever I go to the range...their 3pc is with me in my shooting bags..and like it's been said..use a bore guide when cleaning..it helps..These folks have a-lot of good products..and so does quite a few others...Tipon makes a great rod as well...so does Ox-Yoke...I have a couple of their originals..but I prefere the metal handles of Pro-Shots...much better..and when I pick up 4 new ones later this spring will be getting them..

I've decided on the 26"one piece Pro-shot stainless steel rod.  Any suggestions on a good quality bore guide to go along with it?  Does Pro-shot offer a bore guide for their rods?  What about Jags?  Is there a brass jag that might be a little better than others.

I sure appreciate the help fella's.

Thanks Mac and Tim.  You guys are saving me a ton of time and frustration.  I've been weeding through the internet and finding what I consider to be less than adequate products.  How else can you find the good stuff unless someone else gives you a tip.  I see this RGX model and that's exactly what I was after Mac.  Thanks again you guys for helping a newbie.

Much appreciated!

How about Corbin's Bore Lap.  Anyone know about this stuff versus J-B paste?
