Opinions of the S&W 629 Mountain Gun .44Mag
« on: January 31, 2003, 03:08:40 PM »
I thinking about selling a .40S&W (gonna keep the 9mm) XD40, and buy a S&W Mountain Gun.

Looking for something to accompany me in the woods, and for a little fun shooting.  I reload, so decreased velocity plinking loads will be available.

I've been the large handgun route(Ruger Super Redhawk, both .44 and .480, and larger S&W .44's) and never end up carrying them,  because of their size.

Do you guys think the Mountain Gun would make a good backup gun?

What about the quality of the 629-5's?

Steve

I love mine. I've only had it a month and love it. It's not really a Mountain Gun though. It's the limited edition RSR 'Trail Boss' A little shorter, bull barreld, magnaported barrel, Hogue grips, and a lanyard swivel in the butt. I have only about 150 heavy rds through it, but do shoot 44Specials in it alot. I have many 44.s and I love this one as a belt gun/back-up. What more needs to be said. It is lighter than my 5" or 6 1/2" SW and it carries about like my Ruger 4 5/8" 44 mag and 45LC. I do have a S&W 625 'Mountain Gun, but it's in 45ACP--now your talking, Holy sweet bejesus. Now that's a gun! Regardless of what Sarah Brady says, One can't have too many handguns!

I always like the 29s in all forms. I loved my Redhawk however. One in 5 1/2 inch form might be as good a choice.

S&W 629s

Hay 480:  You will love it.  I love my S&W N-Frames and have two 29s.  Both are 29-2s, one with the original 6.5 inch barrel and one that originally came with a 6 inch barrel that I sent back to S&W to have the Mountain Gun barrel installed.  That is a sweetie and packs so easily it is incredible.  Like you I reload and enjoy the lower velocity loads but even with the heavy loads I can group them together at 50 yds and that is probably the maximum distance I would use a pistol for these days.

I think the quality of the 29-5 is no less than the quality of other Smith and Wesson products and I have always been impressed by them and have enjoyed them for years.  Go  ahead and get that 29-5 and enjoy the heck out of it.

ps:  If your dealer has one and it's not smooth enough for you, have him send it back to the S&W Custom shop for a trigger job - it will be sweet.

Hope this helps.  Mikey.

Mikey and all,

Well I went ahead and picked up the .44 Mountain Gun.  I am truely impressed by the trigger pull on these guns.

I am used to Ruger Super Redhawks, and from the factory the S&W trigger blows them away.  Now if it was only as strong as the SRH's that'd be a plus.

Got it from a private party for $425.  The gun looks great and was even in the original box.

Below is a picture of the Mountain gun w/my Marlin 1895GS .45/70.

That is one nice outfit! I wish I hunted with rifles. It makes me want one just the same. I use the Mountain Gun as my backup to my 14" 375KDJ. I've never had to use it though. I have taken many white tails with my 6 1/2" gun though. Good price, and good luck with them. My new facorites are my M629 Trail Boss, and my new 625 45acp Mountain Gun. Ya gotta love them Smiths!

I liked mine so well I bought another just incase something happened to the original, knowing there not easy to locate. I now have two! They not real easy to find in good shape from a known good seller who did not abuse the heck out of it.

I would be willing to sell my second one because I don't use two of them. It's magnaported and has Hogue rubber grips. It's SS .44 magnum caliber and in near perfect condition. The magnaport was done by the previous owner along with a Magnaport trigger job. The Magnaport is the "4 port" system.

I just traded a friend at work for his Model 624, it has a very light contor barrel and even though the barrel is 6.5" long it's lighter than the 5.5" barreled Ruger Redhawk I gave him.
Mine's a 44Special but I won't miss having the 44Mag revolver, I've still got one of those in a Contender for hunting.  The Smith will see more action on the target range, for woods packing, and as a home defense gun.  I agree the Redhawk trigger can't compare to a Smith.  I sold a Model 66 in 1996 and have had a hankering for another Smith & Wesson since then.

I have a 629 classic with a 5 inch barrel that I think is perfect! I use it as a back up gun for either my Contender or my scoped 6.5 inch 629 classic. I like the size of the Mountain gun, but I'm a recoil pussy and that thing really was hard to hold on target for me, especially with the 300 grain LBTs I use for hunting.  I think that the 5 inch points much better with the extra weight up forward.  In a high ride belt holster, I don't find it much more of a burden than my 4 inch 686 357.

I went from a 629-3 to a 629-5 Power Port. The overall quality of the -5 is better. Tighter in everey respect. Glad they don't make'm like they used to!

Saw a new S&W .44 Mountain Gun today. It was blued with a great wooden grip. They had the stainless steel model, too, but this one looked pretty good. Could S&W be going back to making blued guns again?

S&W Mountain Gun
« Reply #16 on: March 17, 2003, 03:25:08 AM »
Old Griz:  I don't know if S&W is going back to blued steel for their mountain guns but when they rebarrelled my 29-2 with the Mountain Gun barrel, the frame was blue steel and the barrel stainless.  To get the entire thing to one color, they bead blasted the entire ensemble and then blued it.  It looks like a Highway Patrolman with the slim 4" barrel.

If they could do that to mine, I can imagine they could probably polish the stainless steel and then blue it.  But, since S&W started re-producing some of their oldies again it is possible they have a blue steel 4" barrel in 44 magnum, again, giving them the opportunity to build that revolver in blue.  That would sure look sweet, wouldn't it.  Mikey.

Mickey, what I didn't mention before was that they also had a new model 29, blued of course, in a nice presentation case, and newly styled wooden square butt grips. It was either a 6" or 6.5" in. barrel. It was really sweet, too. The new grips are wonderful. The ones on the Mountain Gun had finger grooves, but was not at all like the dinky little wood grips that came with the old M629 DX (or LX, or DL, or what ever the heck it was called). You can actually grab these. And the new gips on the M29 are smooth, but again, totally different from the hogleg grip that they used to come with. Things are getting better!
