Extra barrels
« on: January 24, 2006, 03:36:21 AM »
I have been to NEF's web page and seen the list of extra barrels they have. Are there others they now make that aren't on that list? I went to WalMart yesterday to order one of the .500 S&W rifles; the special order distributor said they were out of stock and didn't know when or if they would get more. I'm going back today and order (try) the .223 Synthetic, mainly so I'll have a frame to send in and get a .44 Mag barrel fitted so I can rechamber it to .445 Super Magnum. Apparently they don't sell the .445 or even the .44 as a complete rifle. Advice appreciated.

The reason NEF has been out of stock for alot of guns over 38 cal could be because of Mississippi's primative weapon law.  They changed it this year to a pre 1900 rifle with exposed hammer and over 38 caliber.  All handi rifles and ultra hunters have been scooped up like gold around here. I wish I had 100 of them because I can sell them quick.  I am not saying that is the only reason but that is a big reason why I cant find one.  I got a 450 marlin ultra hunter at the gunshow this weekend by luck.  I love my new H&R.

NEF still makes the 44 Mag wood stock Handi....

All the barrels that are available with the exception of the .243 Fluted Ultra are listed in the 2005 Accessory Barrel program pamphlet available with new firearms or by mail by calling or emailing them for a copy. They may also have some .357 Mag barrels left that aren't listed anywhere. The web site list is a bit outdated.

There is a big price difference if I can order it through WalMart as opposed to having a local dealer order it for me. I would end up paying about the WalMart price (dealer price) plus shipping and $20 for ordering it and doing the paper work. I can use the .223 barrel anyway, and I think I'd prefer the synthetic stock to the really cheap wooden stock. I'd like to have the .500 S&W but apparently I can't get that through WalMart, nor can I order the .44 Mag through them. They have a list of guns they'll order and the list is chiseled in stone...

Here's their special order list....

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.gsp?cat=170080&path=0%3A4125%3A4155%3A170080

Their supplier is Sports South  which you can check their online inventory..

http://www.internetguncatalog.com/

The 44mag may not be listed because it's a standard stocked item. The 17hmr Sportster is a regular stocked item and isn't listed in the special order catalog but can be ordered probably from a different catalog. I suggest you check at a more knowledgable Walmart store for someone who can order the 44mag for you. Bluebayou is a Walmart manager and posts here frequently, maybe you can PM him and ask for his help. Unfortunately, the 44 mag is out of stock at this time, too. Sounds like the syn stocked .223 and acc barrel may be your only choice if you don't want to wait for it to be available.

Either way, the synthetic stocked 44mag isn't an option from the factory, but you can buy or trade for a set, they come up in the NEF Classifieds regularly or just pick up a syn stocked .223.

You called it, the .45-70 was out of stock so I ordered the .223 Synthetic model, should be here in a week or so. Then I'll send it back to NEF for a .45-70 barrel. I've decided the .45-70 will do anything the .445 will do, it's cheaper and easier to get, and I already have dies, brass, and bullet molds for it. A no brainer, really, it's just that I want the sexy new or hard to get stuff like evrybody else. What kind of accuracy can I expect from the .223 barrel?

My shoulder don't want me to try to turn it into a baby .458 Magnum, but how strong can I load it? Do i have to stay under 18,000 PSI like the Trapdoor, or can I up it a little, to say 25,000 PSI? I'd like to get a 350 grain lead bullet up to 2000 FPS.

It'll take low Ruger #1 level loads easily. The SB2 Handi is available in .500 S&W with load data pressures in excess of 50kpsi which is the same as top Ruger #1 45-70 levels according to Hodgdon. This is in comparable case head size.  So it will take way more than your shoulder!!
