Mohawk 10C Disassembly
« on: January 31, 2006, 10:18:22 AM »
Gunnut,
I have a mohawk 10c .22 that I have had since childhood.
It has been shot little but was stored without proper maint resulting in rust on barell and receiver.
I began to disassemble it removing the obvious screws to reblue and was able to remove the barell but not anything else from the stock.
   What now?

If you've reblued the barrel and receiver cover, there's precious little left in there to reblue..

I haven't been able to disassemble anything from the stock other than the barell.  Would like to take it apart. Rebluing hasn't begun.

There are 2 screws that pass thru the action cover and when removed allow removal of the cover. The bolt operating handle is simply pulled out. Retained by a detnt ball. The action diagram at the lionk below should help. The barrel and receiver sover are all that CAN be blued. The majority of the rest of the piece is synthetic.  The diagram is a 66 but other than the feed mechanism they are the same.

     Pulling the bolt was the missing step I needed. 5 seconds after reading your post and mission accomplished.
Now I can give her a proper cleaning and bluing.
Thanks Gunnut!

The first rifle I ever bought was a M66 and it was an excellant weapon.. Got rid of it when I needed money(college student) and have regretted it since.. With the clip fed variant be sure the screw that retains the clip guide is tight. Even a bit of removable LocTite or you will loose the guide and the magazine..  Other than that and the reminder 'no oil' just have fun...

OK,  no oil.
Is there a spray cleaner like brakeclean or carb cleaner I should spray in there to remove powder residue or should I stick with HP air? I am afraid to use anything on those synthetic parts. It's quite dirty and I won't likely take it apart again for awhile.
            Thanks again, KD

Those nylon parts are very tough but I'd stay away from the acetone in carb cleaner.. Mineral spirits or any normal bore cleaner like Hoppes No.9 would be just great.. Use the air and the Hoppes and all should be fine.. If you wish to use a lube use a dry lube like graphite or moly powder..won't collect unburned powder residue like oil..
