My first carry gun...
« on: January 23, 2006, 09:34:45 AM »
I am not new to guns and not even new to handguns.  I have several and a couple were purchased with the intent to ccw but never stuck with it due to size, etc.

I really want to make a point to CCW now that I am getting married and kids on the way.  The gun would be for travel in car and while out.  We do a lot of camping also so protection while in the tent and on the trail.

Live in PA so don't need a gun to knock down grizzlies or wolves.

I really like the SW model 637 in .38 spc.  Its light and easy to conceal.  My other handguns were also to heavy and quickly spent more time in drawer than pocket.

What does everyone think of the smith 637?  Good choice as a CCW?

Thanks

Perfect - But young children and loaded guns do not mix well. Get yourself a portable gun safe that you can lock and hold the key.

I have a 637.  It is very good for CCW.  I just drop it in my pocket.  Its light weight and compact size make for a very comfortable carry.

It will work, but I prefer a nice compact semi-auto.  :D

I think the fact that you said it is easy for you to carry is half the battle.  In order to be used for self defense, one must have a gun with them on their person and not in a safe or cabinet!  I would carry one if I owned one.  I usually carry a Glock 27 .40 S&W.  It is about the same size as a snubbie, and totally reliable.  It also holds 10 rounds of .40 S&W.  If you like revovlers, great.  Keep in mind that there are many small, concealable semi-autos today, and chambered in powerful calibers. Coupled with today's great variety of quality defense ammo, you really can't go wrong either way.

:D I agree with KK, there a re several small autos that would do the trick, but the wheel gun is also good.   I think I would go with the Model 60 in .357.  You can still shoot the .38s if you like, but have the option of going to something more powerful (+P, .357) if you want to.  JMHO.
