Questions about my first contender ????
« on: January 25, 2006, 06:15:29 AM »
I have some Encores but this is my first contender,It is a stainless,16" 45-70 with a muzzle brake, and a rifle stock included.
How strong is this thing ? I know the 45-70 has a low operating pressure and the contenders seem to come in some monster type JDJ rounds, but everything has it's limitations, will it be the gun or is the limit what the shooter can stand ??If any one has any loading info for 300-350 bullets i would appreciate if you would share.
main use will be hog hunting, if that matters.    thank you, craig.

Continued use of factory or high powered .45-70 loads in the Contender could cause the frame to stretch, ultimately increasing your headspace and causing a dangerous situation.  Get a good reloading manual.   It will have several sections for reloads for the .45-70.  One section for strong actions like the modern Marlin 1895's, and another section for Trapdoor loads.  Use the Trapdoor loads for the Contender.

I got rid of my Contender barrel in 45/70. I got one for the Encore and didn't want to make the mistake of putting full house loads for the Encore in to my Contender by mistake. KN
