Factory 44mag for deer recomendations?

I'm going to be using an encore with a 12"barrel and open sights. Range should be 50-100 yards tending toward 50 or less. I will not be reloading this year due to time and space considerations.

Hornaday has an excellent 240 gr XTP factory load---very effective on deer---easy to duplicate if you hand load. If you are under 50 yds for the shot, just club 'em eith that Encore. Just kidding!!!! :) pg

I'll have to agree, the xtp load is a good one for deer.  A buddy of mine in the guard with me shot a doe at about 40 yds. in the neck, and dropped her on the spot.  I used a reload last year with an xtp at about 75yds, and it completely passed through a yearling deer that was quartering towards.  My dad uses the Win. Partition Golds, and while he hasn't gotten a deer yet with it, he did turn a feral cat's head inside out.  The bullet when dug out of the ground looked just like the advertisements.  I've heard good things about the accuracy of the Platinum Tips, and if the pistol ammo performs anything like the muzzleloader sabots, you will have a dead deer.  I guess the point I'm trying to say is that, there are so many good choices now-a-days, you can't really go wrong.  But I would recommend the three that I just mentioned...good luck!!

I have to agree with the others, Hornady has an excellent 240 gr XTP factory load.  :D

The best two Factory loads out of my 12" Encore  Are, the Hornady 240Gr. XTP  and the Winchester white box 240Gr. JHC..
  My encore seems to like the .430 Dia. bullets the best..  I reload now using the XTP's in 240gr.  Have yet to take a deer with one but have take several ground hogs.  Makes a mess!

I have recovered Both of the above bullets, from wet news paper and the ground .. They both seem to penetrate well and mushroom as they should.

Thanks for the responses. I am going to have to pick up a box of those 240Gr xtp and give them a try. This will be my 1st handgun hunting since a few yotes and p. dogs back in the late 80's.

I would expect just about any factory 240 gr JHP will work for deer, just find the most accurate brand for your gun.

Take a look at Federals Castcore bullets in 300 grains or Speers 270 grain Gold Dots.  I have taken several deer with each of them and they are awesome.

I killed one with a Winchester 240gr. jacketed softpoint. It was what I had been using to practice with before I started loading my own, and I certainly couldn't have asked for a bullet to work any better.

Black Hills 300gr XTP worked good on my antelope- clean hole in and out no bloodshot meat just what I like to see.

For many years, I hunted whitetails in the swamps and pine forests of the South with my Uncles and Cousins.  We mostly used the old Ruger Deerstalker carbines with Remington 240 gr. JHP ammo.  Many deer fell to this combination.  I still use the same bullet in my .44 Mag. Handguns today over a healthy dose of H-110.  If it ain't broke don't fix it.

One of the best ever for deer is Speer's 270 grain GDSP.  Another fine round is Georgia Arms 300 grain 'Deer stopper'

:cb2: Every gun is different and likes different loads. The most accurate factory load out of my scoped Bisley is the 300-gr. Federal CastCore. a very close second is the 270-gr. Speer Gold Dot. cattleskinner mentioned the Winchester Platinum Tips. I have not tried these in any of my .44s but they are terrific performers in my .41.

Well there's my 2¢ worth. Good luck. I hope you find your load without having to spend a fortune on ammo!  :grin:

I carried the 260 gr Corbon hunting load in my Ruger SBH for several years.  It shot well on the range, but I never got the opportunity to try it on a deer.  Now I carry the .480 Ruger, so maybe I'll never know.  It looks like a great load on paper.  They quote 1450 fps out of an 8-3/8" barrel, but I'm sure it is slower in my 5-1/2" barrel.

Anyone out there have experience with Corbon loads on deer?

8) IMHO, the Cor-Bon loads are a bit much for deer, but they work well on the heavier animals.

i shot some 'borrowed" ammo last weekend on a hunt,( left mine at home :-D ) i shot a doe with PMC Starfire out of my 44 mag super 14" T/C Contender..........that ammo did some damage........deer ran 20 steps and was DEAD!!!!!!!

I like the 225gr Barnes xpb. I think Federal loads it in one or two of there lines if you do not have the dies. They should work good on deer under 75yds.

I use Federal American Eagle brand, 44 magnum in 240 Grain JHP bullets. They shoot very well in my SRH do the job in a big way in deer. The sad news is I have a life time supply of hunting ammunition. Two boxes!

Try as many different brands as you can. You may very well find a load that will shoot just fine in your gun. As far as the projectile goes I have not had any problems, with the JHP Bullets.
