454 Casull rechampered to S&W460 MAG
« on: January 20, 2006, 04:38:04 PM »
I picked up a 454 Casull in a trade today, I contacted a person that is going to do a rechamber to 460 Mag. It is a 12 inch barrel, I am also going to have him install a 2 inch muzzle brake.  Just another toy to play with.   :D

Sounds awesome! Let us know how it shoots! Also what kind of velosities you get. Who will do the work?

David White is doing the work. He did a 15 inch 30-06 Encore barrel for me about 2 years ago.  :D

Hey Redhawk, you may be on to something.  Please let us know how it shoots.  I've been waiting, not so patiently, for the TC Custom shop to get the twist rate right in order for their barrels to handle the current factory loads.  I'm wondering if by finding a quality 454 barrel and having it rechanbered will be the answer?  I don't know if the twist rate on a 454 is much different from the 460. :?

Keep us posted on the results. :D

I am sending the barrel out Monday. The rate twist is different between the S&W 460 and the Encore 454 Casull. The S&W460 has a gain twist. I am not shooting factory rounds, I reload heaver bullets in my 460's now and will in the Encore.  :D  But I will keep everyone posted as the results once I get the barrel back.

I  have several good loads that work great in both of my S&W 460 Mag's.
I am not a factory round guy. I love to roll my own.  :D

I bought a set of Hornady S&W460 dies from Cabelas.

Do you have an experience with 454 barrels being off center?

yes,
my is/was, but should not effect the accuracy too much.....hopefully, as it is on loan to a friend of mine who is putting it thru its paces. This is the reason most re-chambers are done....to cut out the mis-aligned bore/ throat with a new one. The 460 is just a longer 454, and if your chamber is off center, then only the new chamber end extending from the old 454 chamber to the new 460 will be in alignment. Below that, the brass will not be concentricly round. You can sort of then neck size your fired 460 brass, but must align it in the same position it was fired in to go back fully into the chamber, or just do a full length size each time.

I e-mail David to ask him about it also. I just want to make sure my barrel is OK and to see what he thinks.

Thanks  :D

better to err on the side of being safe. Not that it would be unsafe to shoot, but you may not have complete satisfaction depending on your 454 chamber.

RWD, thanks for the heads up.  I don't want to pay for the rechamber if I am going to have issues with the barrel. I will have him check it out good before he does the rechamber.  :D
