How has the threat of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) affected your deer hunting? What does the future hold for those of us who harvest deer? Please see:

Here is another link you may find helpful. I ran across it after I made my initial post. It outlines effected areas and precautions that can be taken.

However, the precautions on this site don't take into account the recent discovery of prions being found in leg meat. So far the state in which I live has not be effected as far as officials know but 2 neighboring states have. It seems to be a matter of time.

I do use rubber gloves when field dressing but I've not used bleach on my tools and I have been cutting the pelvic bone. I'm thinking I need to change some practices.

Thanks for the info, :shock:

I will do some research into this on the web and the county game officer live less than two miles from me. I see him often. I think I will ask him how ODNR is tracking and how much risk this is to Ohio. I always wanted my son's to be completely involved so we never take any of our harvest to a processing station. This would reduce the risk associated with cross contamination. How ever if you were to harvest an infected whitetail?? :cry:

From what I've read, bleach will NOT make a difference. What causes CWD and Mad Cow is not virus or bacteria, its a protein. Tough little bugger. I'm not saying dont take precautions, but dont have a false sense of security either.

you actually can't even autoclave it... if i hunted in one of the effected areas i would make sure to get my animal tested. what's the down side? I've killed 2 colorado elk i've had tested. It's free, easy, and relatively quick.

I've read the same kind of stuff too. Yea, those prions are tough little buggers. However, I ran across this at:

The causative agent is very resistant to disinfection. The best recommendation at this time is to disinfect butchering equipment with strong chlorine bleach (household bleach works well).

There seems to be so much unknown about CWD. I guess the good news is that there doesn't seem to be convincing evidence that it is passed on to humans (assuming that the West Virginia DNR website is correct).

Doesnt instill much confidence in me.
From what I've read, as dukkillr said autoclave doesnt work, neither does radiation or a lot of other standard methods. Guess its hard to "kill" something thats not reallly alive.

From what I know of prions, hospitals have no way of steralizing an operating room where somebody with mad cow disease (Crutchfeld's-Jacobsens) has been operated on and the only solution is to seal the room and kiss it off. If this is the case then you'd best throw away any tools you've used on a deer with CWD and if you live in a state where CWD is known to exist then it is pure unadulterated foolishness to not have the animal tested.

I had no idea CWD or other piron related infections exsisted. Makes me wonder if the piron can change over time like we see with a virus ? I looked at a few web sites but the information was more of a basic faq nature.
