tanoose,

I have "chrony"d a number of different bullet weights and powders with my 22" Handi just because I was curious.  What bullet weight and/or powder would you like to know.

Grandpamike , thanks i am very interested in the 440  hard cast bullets . I guess i am trying  to compare the 500S&W to the 45/70. Buffalo bore loads the 440 bullet to 1625 FPS ( listed as a revolver round) so i was wondering how much higher the velocity would go in the 22" handi rifle. I know the 45/70 can get its 430 grain bullet above 1900 FPS Thanks Tanoose

I got a e-mail back from buffalo bore on this subject and they feel i should roughly  get 1825 with ther 440 heavy load in the handi rifle.

I use mostly cast bullets for the big bores (most fun).  I used Cast Performance Bullets 440 gr. Wide Flat Nose Gas Check sized to .500.

Accurate Arms 1680,  40.9 gr,  1898 fps.

Accurate Arms 4100,  33.3 gr,  2029 fps.

Accurate Arms XMP-5744,  36.2 gr,  1897 fps.

Hodgdon H-110,  36.0 gr, 2040 fps.

Hodgdon H-4227,  35.5 gr.  2011 fps.

Hodgdon LilÂ’Gun,  32.5 gr,  2027 fps.

Hodgdon Longshot,  19.6 gr,  1805 fps.

Hodgdon Titegroup,  15.5 gr, 1693 fps.

Handi 22", velocity readings taken at 240 ft above sea level.

Mike, is that a typo??? AA shows a max velocity in a 8" handgun of 1548fps w35gr AA4100. An 800+fps velocity gain in the 22" barrel is considerable.

Man, I was hoping it was for real, I wanted to try some of that AA4100 in my 45-70 and 45-120!!! If it will give that gain over a handgun length barrel, just think what it would give in another 10" over the Handi barrel in a 32" BC!!! :-D

Thanks Mike those are very impressive velocitys Is the 500 S&W giving higher velocitys then the 45/70 with the same weight bullets or can the 45/70 safely reach those velocitys also.

I think the Hodgdon site has 35.0gr of Lil Gun for the 440 cast as a max.  If your 32.5 is going 2027fps. then if you can get close to their max, I would think you should get velocities near 2150fps for 4500ft-lbs.  Thats a shoulderful out of a handi-rifle

My local dealer has four .500 S+W Handis sitting there. Come the weekend he's gonna have one less.  :-)  A lot of calibers have come and gone from H+R/NEF over the years. This may be one that will only be available for as short time so I'm not waitin' for it to be too late, and too bad.

I'm not sure if he had $219 or $229 on them. That's about $20-$30 more than Wally World gets, but it's easy to price them cheap when you can't provide them.
