Looking for info on colt 1911a1
« on: January 14, 2006, 02:50:27 PM »
I received a colt  1911a1 45acp. The two questions I have are. I was trying to find date of manufacture but the serial number was first followed by the letter C. The web sites I have found  have the letter first  then the serial number serial number second . So I cannot find the correct date of manufacture. Also  the box it came in was a brown little box big enough for the colt( a colt box Written in English the written in Spanish) also there was a sales sticker on it that said  Max Cook Sporting Goods. Has anyone ever heard of that name. What state or what year or years they were open. Any info would be great.  Thanks

I'm looking in my blue book here, and I see it says the model 1911a1 had the "C" prefix until 1950, and then the "C" suffix started in 1950.
It says the "C" suffix went from 1950 to 1970. It lists the serial numbers as 240,228C to 336,169C.

This was on what they called the 1911A1 Colt Commercial in my blue book.

Hope this helps some.  The book I'm using is by S.P. Fjestad.

It should have 'Government Model' on the slide, because that's what it is. It is not a M1911A1 unless it has 'U.S. Government Property' on the frame. It is similar to a M1911A1, but that is the designation for the military pistol. These pre-Series 70 commercial government models are very collectable and can have substantial value depending on condition.
