My 45s are coming out pretty dull, albeit clean. Can you share any ideas for making the brass shiny? I am currently using corn cob media.

Corn cob media's pretty cheap, I'd just dump it and put in a fresh load.

If you want them good and bright tumble them twice. Once in walnut to really clean them but will leave a dull finish and than in treated corn cob to pollish. KN

Haywire has the answer. Depending on the media additive about 3 capfuls will make your brass look as good as new.

I use a cap full of Brasso brass polish about every 2 weeks or so depending on how much that i use the tumbler .

Does a wonderful job.

Make sure whatever polish you use contains no ammonia, it leaches the copper outa the brass.

Actually, Brasso contains ammonia.

I use powdered Jewelers' rouge in with my media to give a really high shine.

All liquid polishes contain some water and can lead to the growth of bacteria , i like the brasso because it does contain a very small amount of ammonia which helps to keep the bacteria from growing with corn cob media .

At the very low levels of ammonia that are in brasso i do not worry about the copper leaching . plus it smells ok .

I work in a chemical plant that makes ammonia and have seen first hand what it can do to copper and steal , Very bad :eek:

But at such low levels it is not a problem .

Sounds like you need to change the media. When I add media additive and my brass still comes out dull, I change it.

can't speak for brasso but avoid tarnex at all costs. I made the mistake of putting some 35rem cases, that had been setting for years and had those nasty looking black spots on them, into tarnex to clean them. These were all once fired cases. I was getting case head separations on about 10% of them when fired. The cases were not sticking in the chamber so they removed easily but I was glad I didn't have very many of them. Had to trash the hole lot. KN
