Handgun hunting you're glad you did?

What handgun hunting are you most glad you did? Mine is doing some long-range handgun hunting with a Contender. It's cool to reflect on taking game, both big and small, in excess of 200 yards.

Most rewarding is taking my son and daughter with me and watching them hunt big with specialty handguns (MOA Maximum & XP-100's).
With me behind the trigger it was a cow elk several years ago.  I made three shots from the prone position (Harris Bi-pod) with my 7.82 Patriot (short action Lazzeroni case) center-grip XP-100.  Like elk sometimes do, they seemingly act untouched by bullets, in this case a 180 SGK starting out @ 2775 fps.  With elk, if they keep standing i will keep shooting.  I didn't change my point of aim as I was convinced I was right on.  After the third shot she went down (she had made maybe one step between the 1st & 3rd shot.  While taking excess meat off the hide I recieved an early Christmas present-the 3 exit wounds were under 3 inches in diamater and the 3 entrance holes were even smaller.  Range was just over 400 yards.  Used Leica rangefinders and we took about ten minutes to set-up.  there was little if at all wind that was detectable from where we were to the where the elk were.  She sure tasted good too   This was a two man team set-up and I had my long-time hunting buddy spotting for me and giving me instructions.

I'm usually glad I decided on the handgun once i get into the thick of it, and long guns just get in the way.  It always seems my short hike through the woods brings me back into uncharted territory that you aren't really supposed to be able to walk through....

I started hunting with Ruger Superblackhawk .44mag in South Texas. The brush was thick so shots were close. I started out taking a long gun along. Soon I just took the pistol. If I shot something I wanted it to be with the pistol. The long gun was usually too easy, that's why I got into pistol hunting in the first place.

I enjoy looking back on pics and memories and doing it the harder way with a pistol. It's always fun when I'm elk hunting and seeing people's expressions when they see you hunting with a pistol. There are always a bunch of questions.

I am glad I just handgun hunt, no certain hunt sticks out.

I love that we have the right to hunt with handguns.  The one bitty caribou I've taken after too many shots left me feeling the need for much more practice before I do that again. And my ears were ringing for the rest of the day - forgot to put in ear plugs.

But I love small game hunting and have taken quite a few grouse, rabbits some squirrels, and a ptarmigan or 2 with .38, .357, .41, and of course .22LR.  So nice to have my hands free while walking.

When I moved to upstate NY back in 1979, I couldn't wait to buy my first high power rifle for deer hunting.  I was hunting public land in those days and was lucky to have one opportunity per year to fill my tag.  When I had the chance  to hunt my buddy's private land my tags were getting filled on a regular basis, and I found the shots were coming at 10-75 yds.  Didn't really need my 30/06 for those types of shots, so I switched to a handgun to add a little spice.  Now, living in ther midwest, I can't hunt with a high power rifle, but handguns are legal and I have more confidence in my TC Contender than a shotgun with a slug or a muzzleloader.

My first russian boar a few years ago.  The owner of the ranch wasn't impressed that I showed up with a handgun.  He said that nobody had ever gotten one with one shot since he got into the business (1960 something),  The follwing evening at dinner he came up to me and shook my hand and said I was welcome back with my handgun anytime.  425 gr. .475 Linebaugh at 1350 worked just fine with one shot!

I guess this red stag really stands out.  He was awfully tough.  I wish I had taken the time to wash the blood off my hands before we took photos!
