6.8 SPC Remington Model 7?

I am toying with the idea of taking a Model seven in .223 and rebarreling it into a 6.8 SPC. I realize the bolt will have to be opened up a bit for the larger head of the 6.8. I would want a 20'' SS barrel with a heavier contoured barrel but not as much as a varmint barrel. Is this fiesable? Am I just having another pipe dream? I think it might be a fun gun to poke holes in paper and maybe pop does from my deer stand. Please give me your take on this?

I don't have the caase dimensions for the 6.8 but have seen a few articles. It looks to be a step toward the 7.62x39! That's not a bad idea. Rebarreling a M7 is a common task and it is done just as would a M700 be rebarreled. I can't comment of the mag box as I don't know the case dimensions. It shuld be doable but I don't see it a reason. If it were me I'd ikely lean towards a 250 Savage in a mini-mauser or a 257 Roberts.. Mild, classic and easily available.. Still it would work and we still have the right..

The donor case is the .30 Remington with .422 casehead.  
The logical question is "why?"  But since logic doesn't really factor into these things.....similiar, but old thread here:

Unique would be cool, but the 7mm-08 really fits the bill cheaply.  I have loaded a batch of 110 grain Hornady VMAX for my .270 though so I KINDA see what you are seeing.

The only snag I see is the extractor. I know Remington has/is making a few models in 6.8 SPC, so they must make extractors. But are those available for sale? If not you're looking at making a Sako extractor setup for it. And even if you can get them, the machining on the bolt nose for the recesses is not exactly easy, though it is doable if you're careful and have the correct carbide cutter. Now if you start with a Howa with its M16 style extractor, then your life would be way easier and it would be a snap to convert.

I feel sure your rifle could be converted to 6.8. Another option would be to buy a new Model 7 in 6.8. Remington is chambering them in this cartridge this year. I find the idea of one pretty interesting and am considering getting one.
