New memeber saying hi and looking for a local builder
« on: January 28, 2006, 09:30:43 AM »
Hi everyone,  I have been interested in building a cannon for a couple of years now.  I finally have sometime to get started.  I live in Eaton Rapids Michigan and I remember reading an article about a cannon building that lived close to be but googling isn't bringing anyone up.  Do any of you know of a guy that builds cannon's in the mid Michigan (Lansing area)?

I was hoping to visit him and get some tips for my first one.

TIA and great board.  I will be reading through the old posts...

Bob

WELCOME to the board.

You're near some of the cannon cockers right there.

You have a LOT of options, take a look at our sponsor's work, consider having a local machine shop do the critical work, and there is a second-hand market (they're where you find them).

Any particular preferences?

Thanks Catwhisperer,  I believe the guy I am thinking about lives in Onadaga Michigan but I could be wrong.  I actually have a home machine shop with a mill and a 13 x 40 lathe and pretty well tooled up.

I am thinking something in the golf ball bore size.   From what I have read so far the outside diameter of the barrel needs to be twice the bore size and the length needs to be two to tree times the diameter of the bore. Still reading through the site and deciding on design.

Thanks
Bob

Bob -

You're in the ball park.  Materials, design AND use go hand in hand.  You can 'get away with' thinner walls if you're limited to golfballs as projectiles and have a good powder chamber and inside radius corners.  Building it extra tough is good insurance on keeping out of the National news.

There are a lot of good memories and experiences in the reading.
