G2 problematic, Encore any better?

My G2 is a lemon. First new barrel would not lock up, muzzleloader barrel wobbled side to side, 44 pistol barrel popped open when fired, sent frame back to T/C and they fixed the side to side play with a new firing pin bushing and replaced the spring assembly on the rifle barrel.  The problem is with the .44 barrel. It still pops open every once and awhile when fired. My loads are well under max and carefully worked up.

                   Got frustrated with waiting for my new gun to be fixed all the time and got rid of it. My question is what about the Encore, has it withstood the test of time, has any one ever had any bad experiences with one, in any configuration?
                     Some say a contender is weak compared to it's big brother which I know, but they also say that a contender/g2 is plenty tough. Not in my experience, I will never buy another one. I would rather fore-go the headache of  constant warranty repair on these Thompsons and stay with a revolver but I do like the idea of a single shot. After all the satisfied remarks I've heard about the T/C's I think I just got a Monday morning, or, Friday afternoon built frame.
Encore, Is it tough like a tank, and worth it?

swampthing, I think it would be safe to say that both frames are of exactly the same design as far as lock up, springs and trigger.

I could be wrong.

I have never had any problems with either one.

the contender is just a smaller version. the locking lugs don't really differ in design that much just the encore lugs are beefier and use stronger springs  

maybe you have had a run of bad luck but just stick it out.  to many advantages with a t/c over any revolver in my opinion

swampthing, I had 6 Encore frames, I sold two to a good friend and I still have 4 of them. I have never had a problem with any of them. I would highly recommend the Encore.  :D

I have two new G-2 actions, NO problems with either one. Shooting 7-30 W with one and 357 Maxi with the other one. I also have an Encore frame sitting in the corner gathering dust.  Mack the Knife

i have one G2 frame and i shoot it all the time with a 22lr match barrel,a 357max barrel and a 445 super mag barrel.i also had a 223 barrel but i sold that.i couldnt tell you the number of times ive shot it without any problems

        Has anyone else expierienced barrel to frame side play? Mine did it with the rifle barrels. T/C replaced the firing pin bushing and it eliminated that side to side play you feel, {when the barrel is fully mounted with a fore-end attached}, when you place the buttstock under your arm pit and moving the fore-end side to side to feel for movement. Maybe the replacement firing pin bushing was too big and did not allow the barrel to lock up adaquately, by not letting it seat far enough back into the frame?

It sounds like you did get a lemon.  The next one will probably not be.  I have 6 original Contender frames and lots of barrels.  I have never had a barrel fly open on firing.  I have had one barrel that locked solid when closed with one particular frame.  On other frames it works fine.  

Most of my barrels are now fitted to one frame.  I use fingernail polish to put the last four digits of the serial number on the locking lug so I can put them on the correct frame every time.  

Get another frame and the barrels you want.  Send frame and all the barrels to Ken at T/C or to Jim Henry in California  (TCCRAFT@?  earthlink.net?)  Check www.IHMSA.org and you will find Jim.   They will match the barrels to perfectly fit your frame.

I've had a few Contender frames and never had any problem with them. My first Encore frame started coming open when I went to a Bullberry bbl in 250 Savage Ackley Improved. I sent the frame back to TC, I got a new frame and never had the problem again. Was kind of a bummer because the old frame had the serrated trigger and I liked it better than the smooth trigger. I went to the G2 when they came out, I like the weight and feel of the G2 and my Encore frames went bye bye.   Jerry J

I had a problem with my Encore and side to side play.  I sent it back and they fixed it.  I also had a problem with my Contender and the action popping open on my .44 mag.  Sent it back and they fixed it.  I must say that it has not happened again.  

I am still having a problem with my Encore and shot groups.  Finally got the muzzle loader to work, but the .30-06 barrel is a mess.  Sent it back three times and I am tired of dealing with these people.  

I love my Contenders, but don't like the Encore or will ever recommend them to my enemies.  The TC people seem to have a problem with maintaining a good quality control over their products.  It is a shame, they once were a fine company.  Someone is sleeping at the controls for sure.

Sorry, but I think you should know all the info that is out there on this company.  You will have to make your own mind up.

I hear ya Lawful Larry. That side to side play is annoying. Thank goodness for that lifetime warranty.
I would like to see someone make a .44mag handgun out of a          Ruger #1 action, kind of like a fixed turret tank, I think one would have a tough time breaking one of those.

My wife purchased a new contender frame for me for Christmas,I was happier than a pig in ....! My father-in-law had the old style so I borrowed his .44mag barrel and had the thing fly open three times in the first box of cartridges,figured I somehow released it during recoil.So I bought the 6.8rem barrel last week and it fits so bad it wont even fire,fireing pin cant reach the primer!!!So im sending it back today with high hopes to be returned promptly.This is my first T/C product...maybe my last? :?

Ive' had a Contender for over 30 years, never any problems, even with the 45-70 barrel. Have an Encore and a new G2...............no problems with them either.
