I wasn't sure wear to ask this, but how hard is it to get an FFL.  What are the classes, and where can I find the "Cliff's notes" on this?  What a loaded question, huh.  Thanks.

Try to keep in mind that when you get an FFL you are giving the BATF permission to walk into your place of business at any time, without notice, and go thru your business with a fine toothed comb.  If you are planning to work out of your home then you are essentially giving up your rights against unreasonable search and siezure.  Unless you are really serious about running a gun business it simply cannot be worth the sacrifice.

Like Dusty said you will be letting your self be an open target. I had a FFL for years and during the Clinton years they became so unbearable that I gave it back to them. Unless you are planning to have a walk in store i would not advise opening a can of worms. You will be getting paper work every day with changes you can't understand. BATF wants to make it so rough on the little shop owners that they will eventually drive you out of buisness. Good luck to ya what ever you might do. :D  .......Joe.........

Thanks guys.  I was interested in doing some gunsmith work on the side.  I guess if I am going to think about this I will check into a rejected precast prison cell that the I work for builds.  I would say that one could be had for a good price and it should make the insurance company happy.  I would just put it at the other end of my 2 acres.  Close enough to watch but not at the house.  I'll have to check the details.  If there are any suggestions, fell free. :?

Having an FFL means that you are running a Business and you will have to document that your businesss complies with local zoning, etc. Plus you will have to have all of your local business licenses in addition to the FFL. You also have to have a secured building will alarms and safes.

All of the "kitchen table" dealers in our area were forced out by the zoning laws. You could keep the FFL if you got your property zoned commercial. There weren't any takers......

The info about following all state and local laws including tax # and zoning are correct. And lets not forget Labor and industry here in PA every thing has to be to code for the public. Its not all that difficult to get the license after all the above is followed. I filled out the paper work and sent it. The 2 mistakes I made was corrected at my kitchen table during my interview. Having safes can mean just putting in a couple of homack tin safes. A security system was not necessary when I got my license 2 yrs ago But is a very good idea.

This is what I was looking for.  Thanks Guys.  Keep the thoughts coming.  I am now in the process of checking the FFL links, thanks quickdtoo.  The zoning is no problem, we have none. :grin: As far as accessability and such things, I only have to deal with the county.  I pretty much live in the sticks.  I live two miles from a city of around 3000.  I could do in house gunsmithing on the side and I'm sure nobody would care in my area, but as I said on some of my other posts, better safe than sorry.  If I can't afford to read, learn, and do it right, then I can't afford attorney's fees.
