what should i use this for?
« on: February 17, 2006, 06:10:10 PM »
I came across this Rossi at a really good price needing to be repaired.  I didn’t have a single revolver in the collection and thought I could fix it my self so I picked it up.  Well I got it working and I actually really like it.  But I am wondering really what role it should fill.  I originally figured since I have so little money in it would make a good truck gun.  But then I also have been thinking it would make a nice hiking/woods/ hunting back up gun.
I hunt with a single shot rifle so I like the idea of having a pistol back up for really close or finishing a deer.  I know the barrel is to short for real hunting but what do you think of using it as a woods gun/ hunting backup gun.  Also what ammo would you use?  I know some of you don’t like Rossi but it is actualy nice.  So don’t tell me “you should use it as a paperweight”

I have one of those that I bought new about 8 or so yrs. ago. At least it looks the same. Mine is 357 with compensator. Can you say LOUD. Mine probably has less than 100 rounds through it. I have carried it concealed a few times, but for the most part it has become a safe queen, though it is a good shooter, am sure it is more capable than I am with a snubby.

The great thing about revolvers...yes, even ROSSIs...is that they can be used for just about everything without worrying about them failing on you like a semi might.

I bought "my wife" a little rossi 357 with the idea of keeping it in her nightstand.  It stays there most of the time.  BUT, I found it works really well loaded with shotshells on snakes out at the deer lease.

Another great thing about revolvers....you have six cylinders to load as you please.  I keep 3 loaded with shot and the other 3 hold 357 HP for everything else.

SO, get your moneys worth and USE it everywhere.  They're great little pistols.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

How about swaping material. I'm sure somebody needs it more than you.

Maybe there's somebody who needs a house gun that can't afford one?  I know there are women living alone who are basically defenseless.  It'd require a trip to the range or two but perhaps a life could be saved.

What caliber is it?  Just because it's a truck gun doesn't mean you can't tuck it in your pants for a woods/hiking gun too.  It it's a 44, you have a most versatile handgun.   Makes a good concealled piece if the weather allows you to wear bulky clothing.  Plenty good enough for a finishing shot or even a close in doe that wanders below your stand on the right hand side where you can't get a rifle turned, assuming you reload so you can take the vaunted 44 Special to its potential.  Factory loads for a 44 are anemic and don't approach SAAMI limits for the caliber.

It is a .357 and my good (and knowledgeable) friend reloads for his GP100 all the time.  So I can pretty much get what I want in the way of ammo.  I actually have a female friend that I taught to shoot a little while ago.  She lives alone and currently is without a gun.   I was actually thinking she might like this with some good 38 hollow points in it.  I was thinking it might make a good semi permanent loner to her.  But I need to shoot it a little more before I felt good about handing it to someone else.  After all, I did worked on it

If you do that be sure and give her some resources for understanding the laws in your state in regards to the legal use of lethal force.  As we all know, some states have draconian laws along with district attorneys who'll turn you over to a lynch mob for protecting yourself from a criminal.  Tell her to be sure and keep the phone number of an attorney handy and be ready to pay thru the nose if she exercises her constitutional rights by dusting some low life scum-bag who breaks into her home with rape and mayhem on his mind.  There's more to owning a gun for self-defense than learning how to use it, and some of it ain't pretty.  Don't let all the discourage her, just have her prepped for what's likely to happen.

If you decide to not loan it, a 357 would still fit the bill for the reasons stated in my earlier post.

.357 is a dang good woods side arm, even with a shorter barrel.  If you are talking about finishing a deer off, I would rather have something snubby thats easier to carry.

Check your local laws before carrying it for hunting.  In many states it is illegal to a) carry concealed, b) carry a second firearm while hunting, and c) use a short-barreled handgun for hunting.  Here in Ohio, for example, that gun would be illegal on all 3 counts for deer hunting.  If you used it to "finish off" the deer, technically that is the gun used to kill it.
