Two-Piece locking Bolts
« on: January 26, 2006, 11:31:11 AM »
I am just geeting started with an older Contender.  I only have a few barrels so far(14" 41mag, 10" 222 Rem, & "22  LR)  The 22LR barrel I just bought from ED does not have two-piece locking bolts.  Can anyone tell me I they are pefered on that barrel?  If so where can I buy them?

Lugs

Don't put that 22 barrel on your frame yet. T/C went to the 2 piece lugs to make the action eaiser to open, 1 side moves before the other - a smart way to overcome the friction.
But back to the subject, if your trigger guard pivots at the front of the frame it'll be OK to use the 1 piece lug. If your trigger guard pivots over the trigger you should call T/C and order the 2 piece lugs.
If a 1 piece lug is used on a later Contender's frame it will work - except when you go back to another barrel it might not work, if the pivot screw for the inter-lock saftey has been bent by the 1 peice lug.

Thanks Gavinator for the good advise.  I am not yet that knoledgable about frames.  I didn't know they pivited two different ways.  Looking at my frame it appears that it pivots in the front of the frame.  Maybe this is a dumb question but, How can you tell for sure?

Maybe it's time I bought a good book on contenders.  Can you recomend any?

I bought a book on timing, and tuning Contenders and wouldn't reccomend it. There is much Contender info on the inter-net, even exploded diagrams with part numbers.
You have an early model frame not an easy-open, it's easy to tell the difference, even from here. If there is not a cast in cougar scene on the sides of the frame or if it's a very low serial #, you might have a collectible.

I have a set of the 2 piece locking bolts. I get them for one of my barrels but sold the barrel before I installed them. If you call T/C I think they go for $14.00 if I remember right. I will let you have them for $10.00 shipped.  :D
