Rocklock's Bronze Thunder Mug Augmentation with Pics
« on: May 08, 2012, 10:29:32 AM »
In preparation for Double D.'s second Montana Model Cannon Shoot,  RocklockI, Gary prepared his largest wax ever in hopes of creating a fine Thunder Mug worthy of being the Shoot's "Opening Gun".  He succeeded!

Tracy and Mike

The voluminous wax positive.

Bored to 1", and displayed at the Montana Shoot in 2011 Gary lights a short fuse and just gets going then.......BLAMMO!! .  With no wind, the noise was earsplitting!

Today Mike and Gary bored the Big Boomer out to 1.5" Dia. X 7.5" long and are seen here re-cutting the touch hole which was blocked by folded over bronze.  We are hoping to test it out this coming weekend or maybe Monday depending on wind.  An increase in sound volume is assured, but the sharpness of sound will require at least 3 experiments dealing with the powder charge.

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

Gary, you really have talent! That is a beautiful Thunder Mug you created, great job! Any chance of posting a short video of that thing sounding off? BoomLover

Yes I can post videos of it ,it will not go untested for long  ;D . Thank you for the complement !

Yesterday I put 100 and 200 gr. loads POOF and POOF light . Today I used 100 gr. and a tin foil wad ...... It was surprisingly sporting !

I think 200 gr. and a wad would qualify as a local neighborhood 4 of July load . In reality I believe 4-5 hundred gr. will get her going !

I won't go european on the wadding but it will be stout  ;) .

I suspect you will not get the kind of "sound" that the thunder mugs we see in those european youtube videos as I do not think they are using the same kind powder we do.

Hey DD how's this for sound ! 8)

Today TheMTnME went to the parrie for the purpose of 'testing' the thing . With it's new bore dia. and shorter length it has become abit evil ,it's not happy about losing an 1" of base . But now I can pick it up :D .

This one is sideways for your pleasure ???? :o  and is called 'there goes the smoke ring'

Now is side view #2 and is called 'no tamping?'

None was needed .
As best we could figure we were creating a tornado in reverse ...from the bottom up and suddenly too. With a real air splitting noise we wondered about it ,then we loaded her up again for more testing !!

It was stunning !
