cleaning used traps
« on: February 22, 2006, 05:24:49 AM »
Can you guys refresh my memory or correct me if im wrong??
I got some used traps the other day--some are 1.5's i will use for coons and some are square jawed northwoods 1.75's that I will use for yotes.

heres my plan--
**use muratic acid (dont i dip them in it?) to bring the traps back to bare metal
**just paint the 1.5 after their clean like i do for all my coon traps
**use vinegar/salt to get a light surface rust for the 1.75's so i can dye them normally.

I guess my real question is about the muratic acid---i did this years agoio but havent in a while---anything I need to know other than some common sense?
Thanks
Tim B

Tim, not sure what you are removing--wax,rust etc.
A mix of vinegar and water ,will remove a lot of junk.Because vinegar is an acid, rinse real well. The traps will get surface rust on it quickly.Last traps I soaked ,I did 50/50 water vinegar mix.
I have always been hesitant with muratic acid.If you watch tour traps very closely, you could go with a heavier concentration of vinegar.

sorry--I shoulda been more descriptive.  These traps have rust--but way more than you would want for dying.

I would like to bring all the 1.5s down to the metals so the paint will stop further rusting.

The 1.75's are gonna be rusted anyway so they dont necissarlyneed to be down to the metal but still need to be cleaned up.

will the vinegar remove the majority of the rust?  how long do you soak if you have a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water?
Thanks

I use a concert mixer and tumble mine. I use p-gravel and water in the mixer. Some guys use sand. P-gravel does a better job for me.
After ruining some traps by not nutrlizing the acid. I wont use it any more. Yes I thought that I had nutrlized the acid. The problem did'nt show up till the next fall. When the traps fell apart.
