So, what's the score...?
« on: January 25, 2006, 02:37:29 PM »
I have had my handgun permit for about 33 years now..
The other day, someone asked me if it were "updated"..

  Now, a couple years ago I heard our Rino Gov suggesting a $5 re-permit fee.

  As far as I know; this has never been enacted..at least, I have never recieved communication from NYS as to such a thing..

   So what's the score ? Am I in a " heap of trouble ! " ?

If you want to add any handguns to your permit you will have to go through a Brady Update...You can follow up with your local permit office to see what you need to do.  If you do not plan on purchasing any more handguns then you are in the clear and there is no need for an update.  Of course I would still follow up with the local permit office as they are the final word on this topic.

This piece of legislation was never approved...It's a dead deal.  The only fee you would have to pay is to your local police dept when you have your Brady update done.

ironglow, last I heard about any "STATE" pistol permit fee was that it didn't pass the State Senate. I don't know about any county permit fee's, sorry. They did come out with a new permit though. It's about the same size as a NYS drivers license and just as water proof.....which is a good thing :grin: !!!

Thanks Guys;
   I'm glad that idea has gone dead...
  I haven't purchased any new handguns in about 10 years...in fact, if some of those antis get one of those buy-back programs going , whereby I can get $50-$100 for an old gun , I have about three that I would like to sell them. I couldn't get that for them anywhere else !...LOL
  Those are some of those cheap autos..two in .22LR and one in .380.

  I really don't use my handguns much anymore...but I may carry my 8-shot Taurus .22 mag along when calling yotes...just for a finisher..

    NY Hunter..the sealed , water resistant card seems like a good Idea;
whenever I go to the field with my permit...I have always carried it in a small zip-lock bag, just in case it got wet ?

I wouldn't say ,"The idea has gone dead."  It's merely sleeping in await of Eliot Spitzer & the likes to revive it.  I remember the bill & I remember writing my Senator and it took a lot of energy on out parts to have it defeated.  If & when the tables turn,  get ready for another go at it.  They wanted to require everyone to update their old registration & pay $50 to have it renewed.  My thought at the time was it was an attempt to "Call in" all the old registrations without any restrictions in order to add the current restrictions referring to hunting & transport to & from pracice range.   I'm sure they also were hoping the $50 charge would result in many owners selling their guns.  Keep vigilant on this!!!

rebAL, if I remember correctly it was shot down by just as many democrat as republicans. It would have put way to much strain on the local issuing agencies (local sheriffs offices and judges) and they WERE NOT going to get any of the money. It was all going to go the state. Now if the Spitzer gang is willing to give some of the money back to the local issuing agencies......then we might have a BIG PROBLEN! :shock:

You may be right about that NYH.  Too bad they defeated it on the grounds of $$$ and not because of principle.  I guess that's the only time the Democrats will vote our way!

Most all other permits, licenses, registrations etc have all jumped in charges..

   Will the politicians in NY state EVER learn that they are "killing the goose that lays the golden eggs"...the taxpayers, that is..?

  I suppose they won't...they will just take the stste and "ride it to ruin ! "
