I am thinking of picking one up in a Savage 11FCNS. What are you guys thoughts on this caliber? I want a light weight gun with a fair amount of reach for backpacking after mule deer. Moslty be a deer gun but might use it for elk too. Is the .270 WSM a good choice?

sounds good. i am sure it will work very well. go to www.remington.com and check out their ballistics tables for this round. tons of power.

also, make sure you get the savage with the accutrigger because without it, the trigger is really gritty and isn't adjustable very far.

Excellent choice in the .270 WSM and the Savage M11FCNS rifle. My .270 WSM is a Savage M10GXP3(one of the package rifle that came with a pre-broken Simmons scope). I used it last year and this year for Blacktail/Mule Deer and Elk. An accurate, hard hitting combination. Lawdog

Lawdog, what problems did you have with the scope? I have thought about getting my wife the Savage package youth rifle in a 7mm-08. What about the scope mounts that come with it?

I am excited about getting the 270 WSM. The more I research it the more I think it will the perfect caliber for what I want it for. What bullets and loads have you found that works well?

The scope was broke during shipment(UPS most likely :roll: ). The rear lens was cracked. The guy at the store made me a deal by either having the scope replaced or giving me an additional 15% off the scope of my choice. My Savage wears a Burris Black Diamond 6x-24x 50mm scope so you know which deal I went for. I am using 66.7 gr. of H4831sc for 3,217 fps. ahead of a 130 gr. Barnes TSX bullet. this load out of my M10 will group under 3/4 if I do my part. With it I killed a nice cow Elk this year at 220+ yards. Shot was broadside and the bullet went in a bit high on the right side, smashing a rib, ruining both lungs and taking out a rib on exiting. Exit wound was about 2 or so. At the shot she staggered a moment then took off running. Ran about 40 yards and piled up. The two Mule Deer bucks that I have shot with it havent moved more than a few yards after being hit. The Savage bolt action rifles have really surprised me and the .270 WSM is an even better surprise. Deadly accurate, flat shooting and hard hitting is the only way to describe it. I am completely happy with mine. Lawdog

I bought a 11FCNS in 270WSM about a month ago. My first Savage and my first WSM. With it I picked up a few boxes of Winchester 140gr Accubond premium ammo. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed with the result I got with this ammo at the range. Groups were 1.5-2.5" (mostly over 2")......not what I was expecting given all I had read and heard about out of the box Savage accuracy. I have not tried any other factory loading.

I picked up some 130gr Barnes TSX and Hornady Interbonds. Using Accurate's MagPro powder, both bullets gave gratifying results with a slight edge to the TSX's. Watch Accurate's data on MagPro, my gun showed pressure (flatten cratered primers, bolt marks on the case head, very hard to open bolt) at a full 2.5grs less than Accurate's max (75.5gr). I have settled on 70gr to deliver an average velocity of 3250fps. Groups with the TSX's have been between 0.5-1.1" . Interbonds are only very slightly larger on average.

If you want a light gun, then the 11FCNS should fill your needs. I hunt whitetails from a ladderstand over feed plots, so weight is not a huge consideration for me. If I had it to do over, I would probably go with the 12FVSS with the 26" heavy fluted bbl. For my purposes, the 11FCNS in this caliber is a little light. You will feel it at the end of a range session after shooting numerous loads.......and I tend to shoot a lot per session.

The bbl on my gun fouls quickley and easily......something I'm sure will decrease as I further wear the bbl in. A dirty bbl does not seem to bother this gun too much, but it will tell me with groups opening up that it needs cleaning. I do like that magagzine set-up. It is a single position feed, but allows for top-loading by pushing the ctgs down into the mag. Magazine capacity for the WSMs is only 2, for a total of 3.

In sum, I was disappointed with the results of this gun and the factory Winchester premium 140gr accubond ammo. Once I made up my own loads, this gun began to show potential. Overall, I am pleased with the purchase and this Savage has delivered the expected bang for the buck.

HKG3K..dont worry.
With the winchester 140gr Accubond 270WSM, I've got the SAME bad experience.. With my Browning a-bolt stainless, i reload; and most of my reload ( accubond ) are playing between 0.5 -1.0 inch 100meter.
Just to compare i bought a box of winchester...and SCRAP !!!
2.5 inch 100meter...and thats not because of the scope...Swaro 6-24x50

The problem: Remington DON'T do 270WSM....
But for me..it's not a big problem.....

I have had great luck with 270wsm ammo in the fed. - 140 accubond shoots hole for hole for hole time and time again. 130 fed loaded nos BT shoot less than 1/2 at 100. Gun is Ruger m77 mark II stainless with lam. stock.

I think that your combo is about perfect for mulies. Mine in 300 WSM is exceedingly accurate, and the 270 WSM will most likely recoil less. My scope is fine son far, but wondering how long it will stand up to magnum recoil on a light rifle.

PS- the accutrigger makes ALL the difference in the world!
