open sights available
« on: February 02, 2006, 10:42:45 AM »
Are there any open sights available and is it possible without the help of a gunsmith to mount them on a handi.  I know a few of the calibers come with them, but I would like to put them on the .357 i am having fit.

thanks

josh

Barrel mounted sights require drilling and tapping in both locations unless the barrel comes with sights from H&R which some do. Or they can be ordered with sights in the acc barrel program, but they will charge an extra $50 or so if it's not a factory option. Rear aperture sights that fit the 2 rear scope base mounting holes are available. Williams makes front sight ramps that can me sweated(soldered) on, too. For more info on sights, see the FAQ.

My .357 barrel came with open sights installed - at no extra charge. Has something changed?

I believe all NEF rifle barrels are D&T for a scope base.  The Williams peep is easy to install.  May need a higher front sight.  I used the one made for the .22 hornet barrel.

Since the .357mag barrel isn't on the list, the only way to know how it will come is to ask CS. Barrel sights that have been coming lately are the Williams WGOS sight, the front sight on the .500S&W has been reported as being plastic!

Umm, why mount the sight to the base when they make several sights that mount in the existing holes? A sight mounted on top of the base would require a super high front sight to work at normal ranges.

Just thought I would toss it out. The original idea was to have a reciever mounted site on bolt guns. More specifically, the rugers that have the "built in" scope base on the receiver. Then they made one(or are in the process of) to mount on weaver bases. Wouldnt be much point on a handi, but again, just tossing it out.

Quick,

The .500 S&W Handi's I have been seeing have both front an rear sights made of plastic. :?  They are exactly like the old Huntsman plastic ones. :x

Busta, that's really disappointing, a fella expects that kinda thing on a CVA or Traditions, but not on an H&R! :(
