I picked up a .45-70 last night for a hog hunt in March.  Can't wait to get to the range but I know my shoulder will be feeling it as I usually load up thumpers for whatever caliber I'm working with.

How's the recoil on yours?

Well about 10- 15 rds and I start to give my shoulder a rub   and have to remind myself to relax as I pull the trigger, my 243 is alot more pleasant to shoot, going to start thinking about a replacement recoil pad,
regards Howard.

A good Limbsaver pad and a neoprene shell holder with some soft foam under it..and the butt stock filled with #6 shot is how I set mine up and recommend to anyone wanting to shoot heavy 45-70 loads,to do the same.It extends my shooting time and makes it much more enjoyable shooting it off the bench..

Mac

PS:...Nice group you got there...it certainly will put the hurt on anything you hunt with it :D
You can cry me a river... but...build me a bridge and then get over it...

Choate Vamit stock really tamed recoil with my 45-70, can even shoot it from bench without pain to my 65 year old shoulder.........

I put a 1 1/4 pound bar in my stock , i haven';t tried it yet but the 1 1/2 pounder in my 10 guage works fine. I am going to buy a mercury recoil reducer to put in the stock there largest one is 7/8"x5" x 16 ozs i think this may work well , my friend has one because of his bad neck in a 30/06 handi he said it shoots like a 243.

Gentlemen. For trips to the range with hard kickers, check out the Shooters Friend slip on pad . This pad claims 70 % recoil reduction. I have one. IT WORKS. I picked it up at Cabelas.

Do yourself a favor and check it out.
shot placement is everything.
