Skirmish powder?
« on: March 05, 2006, 08:10:53 AM »
Has anyone had any experience with Skirmish powder? I noticed Powders Inc. has it really cheap---$5.75/ lb in 25+ quantity. I'm thinking of trying it when I get my bb mortar running. When throwing 3-6 oz. at a time, it adds up quick. I've been using Elephant from these guys in the Moline, IL. area- www.addictedtoblackpowder.com

I have no personel experince with skirmish powder, but , have been told that it is not a well sifted for size as regular powder. I dont know what all the extra "fines" would do. besides increase pressure and cause unkown burn rates.
I think it it made for those in the reenacting community who make smoke and muffled noise and dont worry about hitin anything.

Only what I have heard.

:D HI
I have used Schuetzen's reenactors BP for 3 years in my musket. It is a mix of grades and works very well. When I ask about which powder to use in my 10 Lb. Parrott, Maine Powder House said; if I was shootin cannon powder, if I was makeing noise reenactor's powder.I make lots of noise, smoke and flames what a blast it's like being 7 again.

I e-mailed Powder Inc about the skirmish powder.
Here is the reply I got:

Rick:
Skirmish is a Chinese powder.  We have sold about 12000 pounds to
re-enactors for use in cannons.  We have sold a few hundred pounds to people
firing bowling balls and small projectiles from cannons.  It is about 10%
less powerful than GOEX, but most of my re-enactors don't care because of
the price.  It ignites good and does burn clean for black powder.
I also have mounted cowboy action shooters making blanks with it.
Let me know if I can help you with any other information.

So what do the Chinese know about making black powder?   :-D

I wonder how it's shipped overseas?  The haz-mat fees must be most of the cost of shipping!

They probably ship it in a Chinese ship.  No politically correct UPS chairman to worry about.

I finished off a can of GOEX 1Fg today, and then I tried some 1F skirmish powder.

I was firing blanks only.

I really couldn't tell the difference between them (other than a 2/1 difference in cost :-)

Fir what it is worth, I do believe that it is not 1F"g". The "g" means that it is "glazed". I don't think this is glazed. While that might matter for smaller granulation (to flow better), I havn't seen a difference in the big granulation.

There may be some difference in moisture resistance due to glazing. The metal can should keep moisture out anyway, so I am not sure if that would matter a whole lot. For the 2/1 price difference, I am pretty happy with it.

If shooting projectiles, I might stay with GOEX. I am assuming that you get more lot/lot consistancy for your money, and given the expense of the projectiles the cost difference may not be worth it for projectile shooting.

Even that theory could be proven wrong of course.

Use the Skirmish powder for smoke an noise, but I think I would stay away from it for projectiles....to much of an unknown.  There is a reason the N-SSA  and AA say use FG or Cannon Grade only for shooting in cannons

We have talked about Skirmish powder at least 2 or 3 other times. Everybody who has used it, likes it. Not one person has ever said they tried it. And didn't like it. I have launched 40 bowling balls in the last 2 weeks with it. With no problems. Is there anybody out there that has had a problem with Skirmish powder?
