Quick, best way to send ammo?
« on: February 07, 2006, 11:44:43 AM »
Hi Quick, whats the best and legal way to send ammo? Can I mail it by marking it "ORD" and sending it by USPS ground? If not what is the legal and most cost efficient way?...Thanks....<><....

MSP, there's only one way, by ground either UPS or Fedex. I shipped ammo last week by UPS Ground, the UPS Customer Center employee  called to make sure I could, it had to be marked ORM-D and Small Arms Ammunition and had to be in a 200lb rated box. Dunno what Fedex's rules are, probably similar. Primers, powder and ammuntion can't be shipped by mail(USPS) at all.

I just mailed some last week, had to go to the main UPS branch cause the little shops aren't authorized to do that...at least here..

anyway... the box had to be labled small arms ammunition written somewhere on the outside, that was it.

off it went....

I believe it only has to be marked "ORMD" and not small arms ammunition.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

Like I said, it had to be labeled ORM-D using the blue label and marked small arms ammunition. I listened when she made the call to their hqtrs or where ever they called for the info. They said it had recently changed, the small arms ammunition was the latest addition. They also told her that it had to be marked small arms ammunition on the package by the customer, that she wasn't supposed to mark it!! Dunno if the 200lb rated box was a new requirement or not, I think that is a requirement for all hazardous material in 49 CFR.

Every time I've gotten ammo shipments via UPS from the manufactuers it has been marked with BOTH. There are lots of other things besides small arms ammo in ORM-D and not all of it is OK to ship.

well since we live out in the sticks, all our lady did was take a red marker and write the words "small arms ammunition" on it and off it went.

that was after she pulled out the rule book and read it.

who cares what's on it as long as it gets there.

What the heck, a fouled up post again!!!, and no delete button on the post. What the heck is up with this site? All others (except Marlin owners for the last 2 days) seem to be working fine, fast, accurate, and properly. Is it just me or are there many problems with PM's, slow to load screens, and in general screwy happenings trying to post and read messages here now? Is the search feature just not working at all? No spell check either.  It's so frustrating to try to read or post recently. Over the last month or so it has not gotten any better and it may be getting a bit worse in general. What's up?....<><.... :?

Well all is well with the ammo shipment, it's in North Carolina already...no problem at the UPS terminal, ( or so I thought) the woman there put a couple of blue ORM-D sticlers on it, wrote "amall arms ammo" on it in red marker pen and off it went. I later recieved a message (e-mail) the shipment went out, then rather quickley recieved another saying the shipment was voided!!! I again hopped in my truck and returned to the UPS terminal (my third trip there regarding this shipment!!) anyway, she called a superior and was informed 2 things, since the person on the other end of the phone knew her personally the shipment would go out, and also that she should also write "cartridges" on the outside of the box, why I have no idea, but the bottom line is it's almost to it's destination, and in only a couple of days too....<><....
