Anyone tried the "Managed Recoil" in .308?
« on: January 27, 2006, 05:34:11 AM »
I've developed a flinch and missed a nice 10-point this season because of it.  When the deer stepped out I had to take a freehand shot at about 60 yards.  I anticipated the recoil and sent the bullet over its back.   #$%@!

I thought I might try a couple of boxes of the Managed Recoil to see if I can get my flinch under control.  Heck, if they work well I just might stay with them.

My other alternative is to buy a 30-30 or .243 barrel to go with my Ultra .308.  Any advice?

well i never tired the factory Managed Recoil loads but i did shoot a few light handloads in my 308. i would just buy a 243 (or trade your 308 for one) both of my sisters and my mom shoot my 243 with no problems.
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

Get a 45/70 or 450 marlin barrel. Shoot 2 boxes of full house ammo and then pick up that 308. You might flinch for the first shot but after that it will feel like a kitten. I am not being funny it really does work for me.

Take off the recoil pad and fill the bolt hole with lead shot or as I did with eight 1oz 75 cal. Musket balls.  It makes the gun about ½ pound heavier.  I can shoot the .308 all afternoon at the range with no flinch and I am a person who doesn’t like recoil.  Some also say a quality recoil pad will also help.

If you have some other rifles, shoot one with less recoil, till you feel confident again.  Then try a box of the lightest and slowest loads you can find for the 308.   Remingtons managed recoil is a 125 gr bullet, very light and should help you get back to where you were.  Good luck and happy shooting.

I used to hunt in Fredricksburg around 1955.  A .243 is enough gun to take your local deer, but your .308 is probably a better choice.

There's more than one way to reduce felt recoil without buying a new gun/barrel.

As mentioned, you can load the butt up with mercury vials or lead to create more weight for the gun.

You can shoot lighter bullets, like in the managed recoil loads,  but the BC get's less than optimum for longer shots (that shouldn't be a big concern where you are).

You can shoot the same bullet with less powder, but you have to reload to take advantage of that.

You can replace the recoil pad with a Limbsaver pad.

If you don't reload, more weight, with managed recoil loads and a better recoil pad should make things more comfortable.

Be sure to wear ear muffs or ear plugs, since muzzle blast probably accounts for more flinch production than actual recoil.

.308 Managed recoil works great.  Also a good Simms Vibration Labratory Recoild pad will also make a big difference.
My two teen age daughters shoot a managed recoil hand load with 130 gr soft point all day long.  Very accurate.  .308 is a great caliber for deer.

all of the above should work......I shoot a 25-06 and it has only about 12 pounds of felt recoil in a 8 pound rifle......the 7MM-08 has the same (or so close you'd never feel it)....by comparison,a 308 has about 15 pounds and a 243 has about 8 pounds of recoil....

hope my ramblings helped, and I hope you get that flinch under control  :D
Good shot placement + well constructed bullet = DEAD
