Yes, no and yes.  :-D

The Model 17 doesn't come in a 4" but the Model 18 does and they are otherwise identical except for barrel length. The 17 is 6" or 8-3/8" whereas the 18 is a 4". Yes they are finely accurate, the best double action rimfires ever made.

sounds like a model 17 or 18 is what i,m after. i have a high standard hd milatary wioth 6 7/8 barrel that i love to shoot but its a little long and heavy to carry.  i was thinking the 4 inch smith will be a little easier to tote.
will i give up much practical accuracy?
 thanks boys!

I'm not sure they're readily available at all...
But I inherited a Colt New Frontier SAA convertible in .22 lr or .22 magnum..
It's accurate enough in .22 lr, but with the .22 magnum cylinder it just absolutely SHINES with the old Bushnell Phantom scope on it. I think the bore diameter might be closer to .222, this might be why the .22 mag works better...
But...that is the most accurate .22 handgun outside of the competition type ones I've ever shot in my entire life.
I understand copies are made today of the saa in .22 lr convertible, I'm not sure how they stack up to the colt..
But..I love mine. Might want to look at that option?

S&W makes a awsome 22lr revolver the 617. I have not been a S&W fan and after looking for over a year for a quality, accurate revolver that was under a $1000 mrp, I found the 617.  I was guided, prodded, and intimidated by 22 revolver shooters to buy this gun. I thank them all. You will find new and used 4-6 inch ss models with 6-10 shot capacity. I just have been fortunate to have my second grandchild, so I will buy another 617.

Get a ruger single six.  I have one in a .22/.22mag, and its just a sweet gun.  It has the 10" barrel, meaning that I can knock a squirrel out of a tree at 50 yards everytime, and it's accurate farther out than that.  Real straight shooter, and at good prices.

:cb2: I have a .22 Ruger Bisley and a .22 SP101, and they are both fine guns. The SP101 probably gets used more than the others, but the most accurate .22 I own is my S&W 617. It is an amazing gun. It has a 6" barrel (and is scoped), but I would love to get another one in 4". However, since I already have four .22s, and as of yet, still do not have a FA83 .41 mag. (sigh), I don't see another .22 coming my way for a looooooooong time.

My vote is for the S&W 617.  :D
