building a Rem 700 stock--what recoil pad?
« on: January 30, 2006, 06:42:47 PM »
Okay, I have an old 700 Classic stock that I just didn't like.  Cheap looking finish and no recoil pad.  I have stripped it and found out why they use that opaque stain on their stocks-the wood is two colors, on one side of the stock it is whitish blond and on the other side it is a very pretty red with dark grain.  Must be a heartwood/sapwood cut of the tree.

So here is the plan:  pick a recoil pad, cut the stock to LOP, mount the pad, refinish the stock, and do a glass bedding job.  This will be a first on all counts except the refinishing.

The rifle is a 7-08, but I have a bad shoulder.  The R3 pad on my synthetic stock is fantastic.  But the ones for sale say for synthetic stocks only.  Kickeez, Hogue, Pachmayr, who?  Who makes a pad as good as the gel R3 that is grindable and can be screwed to a wood stock?

Sims Limbsaver makes a pad for the 700 wood and also   3 differant grind to fit  pads.  Sims also is the maker of the R3.

I have Pachmayrson  on  my rifles and on a turkey gun.    Really helps with recoil.     I was considering the Limbsaver for my newest gun, but if it ain't broke, why fix it?

Bluebayou,
I have an R3 on a hard kicker also.
Brilliant performance is difficult to duplicate.
Go to Remingtons website and get the info you need to get the correct pad, lest you be disappointed.
I believe the screws that come with it may be a shade long and you can either nip them a bit or purchase drywall screws the proper size and length at any home imp. or hardware store.
   Just my  :money:

Did you put the R3 on a wooden stock?  The ads always say for synthetic stocks.

Sims R-3 does work on laminated wood too.  Nice pad.
