Problem drifting out front sight on my BC
« on: February 02, 2006, 05:33:52 PM »
Hello the wire!

I bought a shorter replacement for the front globe sight on my BC.  Trouble is, I can't get the original sight to drift out from either direction!  All the sight pushers I found on the Internet say they are NOT for sights dovetailed into the barrel itself.  So heck, how do I do it?

BTW, the new sight is for a 3/8" dovetail.  Did I get that right?

Thanks,

The barrel has to be held solid in a vise between lead sheeting or wood blocks.

Drift the sight out from right to left with a brass punch and a smart whack or two.
.
Right is barrel facing away and sights up. Apply some penetrating fluid and apply a bit heat to the sight with a benzomatic. keep the flame away from the barrel lest you ruin the blueing. Only enough heat to bubble the penetrating fluid.

I bought a brass sight drift from TOTW that works great for removing and installing sights without damage to the barrel or sight. Sights on the BC are in there real tight, that's for sure!! Buck the barrel up solid like Fred said and it'll come out!! Be careful and don't slip or you'll ruin the globe, the smith that did the rechamber on my 45-120 made that mistake, cost him a new sight!!

I was a bit "shy" when I needed the front sight of my BC moved. Didn't get me anywhere.

I supported the barrel and let 'er fly with a plastic faced mallet.

WHACK!

Ahh, that looks about enough to center it.

And so it was.

Tight? Yes. Insurmountable? No. Just support the barrel and give it a good whack. It worked for me.

Aim true, don't knock the globe off.
