Has anyone built or know of a muzzleloader built on one of Ruger's single shots? I have a friend contemplating doing do on a No. 3 looking for suggestions.

I haven't heard of that. I'd be interested to know 1) how it would work; and 2) why?

I'm a tradional muzzleloader, so I'm really quite biased, but I'd think he'd be better of just getting a real one. Nonetheless, I'd really be intrigued to hear about it if it works out. Keep us posted.

My buddy and I do traditional too... He has two Pacific Zephyrs, a 20 and a 12 bore. :wink:

Right on! Nothing like the smell of sulphur smoke from real black powder. The MLs are single shots in a category all their own (literally and figuretively).

Haven't seen a #1/#3 as a regular muzzleloader, but I have seen a very fine #1 built into a breechseating muzzleloader, complete with false muzzle. In typical fashion for this type gun, it seats the charged case in the regular fashion, and then the bullet is loaded into the muzzle and seated against the case.
A friend owns this gun, and shoots schuetzen with it, with very respectable 200 yd. groups. His gun is fitted with a custom .32-40 barrel.

If you scroll down the page, you will see a bunch of muzzleloaders. Someone has made a ruger #1/#3 into a muzzleloader. It's the one furthest to the left in the picture.

This place http://www.smokelessmuzzleloading.com/ has done several No 1's. Their conversions can use smokeless powder, but should be OK with black powder. I thing they've ever done some over/under conversions (double single shot?). They are a custom shop and will probably do whatever you want.

We built one in the shop I work for. It uses magnum case heads cut off to 3/4 inch to hold the primers and seal the breech, has a screwed in deal to seperate the case and the powder charge. We made a set of dies that allow you to pre engrave Barnes X bullets so they can be loaded from the muzzle, and it uses 460 Weatherby load data and on up if you really want to. .45 caliber, BTW. I fired it a few times with 110gr. H4350, and it's a real eye opener!
