30 pdr Parrott
« on: February 03, 2006, 06:17:27 AM »
This is the Paulsons' orginal 30 pdr Parrott.  You can see the projectile emerging from the muzzle blast.  The gun is being fired with a 3lb powder charge, the target was one mile away.  The second photo was at night.  The gun was sighted before nightfall.

For those of you without direct artillary experience let me explain, to help you understand the humor.

Artillary talk on the radio is precise and designed to prevent mistakes, hence, everything is repeated by the receiving person echoing what the transmitting person said, for example:

18 this is 24, adjust fire, over
24 this is 18, adjust fire, out.

(Over meaning: I am expecting a reply; Out meaning: I am not expecting a reply.)

BUT THE WORD 'REPEAT' has a special meaning.

The communication:  REPEAT, over;  REPEAT, out means to fire the exact # of rounds by the battery again!

So the casual use of 'REPEAT' on the radio is verboten.

THat comes and goes.  The little box with the red x means that the program went to get the picture and it didn't make the connection.  Try again a little later.

It sounds like you're getting timeouts.  Try refreshing the page.

Wow, cool picture!! I envy the lucky men who can be around when the Paulson brothers go into action! I guess at some point they have shot all their guns from the 13 inch mortar to 30 pound parrots etc etc..? I wonder if they have ever shot their 10 inch rodman??

Here is another photo showing the crews in action.  I learned a lot about seige guns the times that I have been there.  I am the guy leaning on the handspike.
