17 HMR questions to shooters who use it

What do you use the 17 for? Is it good compared to other calibers for that purpose?  Is it better than handloaded .22 centerfires? Why?  I'm just curious. I don't understand the popularity of the cartridge. Thanks.

I'm taking a 14" contender prarie dog shooting soon, should be a dandy for that. As to what it's got over the 22lr or 22mag, check out the ballistics chart comparisons on the rimfire rifle forum and see why there becoming so popular. I just hope the ammo cost comes down soon.  KN

I use the 17 HMR for fun.  My daughter loves to shoot it.  What does it have over the 22 centerfires, I do not have to reload all them shells when we go shooting and the cost is about identical to reloading 22 Hornets.  Accurate, no reloading and fun to shoot.  Who knows, maybe I will shoot a critter with it some day.
