Question on 41 special brass.
« on: January 14, 2008, 06:58:48 AM »
How can I make 41 special brass without the case trimming routine?  It looked like I was in the brass wool business and totally inadequate production for my needs.  I have used a 10mm trim die to make 41 "Russian" brass, and that was ok.  I could finish 50-60 pieces an hour.  Not light speed but ok.  Can I get a 41 special trim die of the shelf or maybe put a washer under the 10mm trim die?  I recall seeing mention of that technique with 38/357 and 44/44mag dies to minimize adjustment when switching ctgs. within caliber.  Lastly, is there another way to skin this cat without buying specialty brass?

What I did back when I wanted to make a large quantity of .30 and .357 Herrett cases was buy a Forster case trimmer made to work with my drill press. It's basically just a holder for the case and the trimmer goes in your drill press. How well it works depends on how accurately you can set the stop on your drill press. Mine is an elcheapo and can't be set very accurately so I set it to trim a bit on the long side and finished it on my regular trimmer.

Not super speed but far far faster than a regular trimmer in taking that much length off the cases. It beat any and all other methods I've tried. If I were wanting to make .41 Special brass from magnums that's what I'd use. If you have a quality drill press you should be able to do the finished product on it.

A 41 magnum Lee trimmer modified to produce a case the right length used either with a hand drill motor clamped in a vise, a drill press, or a mini lathe will make them right quick. I found using some tapping fluid makes the brass cut way easier and doesn't build up so much heat.

Check with Starline.  There is a rumor running around that they may get into the .41 Special business very soon.

That isn't a rumor.  Rocky Rabb had a big hand in persuading Starline to make a run of 30 to 60 thousound .41 "special" cases.  Twas me, I'd get two big batches of that brass if I shot that round.  One to shoot and reload for now, and another as backup.
