M-1 Carbine front sight problems and more
« on: February 07, 2006, 03:00:01 AM »
Gents,

I have an M-1 carbine with a front sight problem. I have always thought something was wrong with this sight, and now I _know_ there is, I just want to know how I should fix it. I have posted some pictures to my website to illustrate.

The first one here is a shot of the barrel as is. My problem is this - my sight is missing the 3-blade configuration I usually see on these rifles. What's more, the single blade that IS there is too short - almost as though it's been filed or worn down - which results in the rifle shooting high, which is the real crux of my problem.

Here are some other pics of the status quo:

Finally, here is a picture where I have drawn in what I feel the sight should look like over the existing photo:

Is there a way for me to fix this? Better yet, is there a place where I can buy a replacement sight, or is this sight part of the barrel?

Secondly, if you look at this photo, you can see some markings:

It may be hard to read here, but I have a much higher resolution file, and it says "Underwood 2-44" and then it has that bomb-looking mark, which I think is an arsenal stamp, but I really don't know. If someone out there could tell me something about this rifle, that'd be great - I'd be interested in finding out more about the history of it. (You can also see how wrecked up the sight is very clearly in this picture)

Thanks!

Underwood is simply one of the "MANY" manufactures of Carbines'
during the war. The "firebomb" or "flaming bomb" is a U.S. military
acceptance mark. As for the sight, look up Gun Parts Corp. on the internet
and get a catalog. they are a great source for parts.
