How do you call your moose?
« on: September 12, 2004, 03:02:24 AM »
I have used commercial calls, cupped hands, birch bark, even a wet leather strip tied in a can. All seem to work.
What works best for you?

String with a can works well in Maine, before dad was deployed he called in many a moose for hunters to take using the string in a can.

I agree;  They all work.  An easier call to make than birch-bark is rolled roofing material (without stones) wrapped with tape.
I also blend in breaking branches/whacking trees & spilling water if at waters edge.

Well. This will be my first year hunting the giant deer but the season is set at the very end of the moose rut. I am not sure if I will be able to call, but my dad and I bought a tape and the narrator suggested using your own voice.

I have been practicing a cow call but from what I understand, only a young desperate bull may respond that late in the season. The narrator does mention that there is a call that one can use late in the season but I am still practicing.

I have gone with some people in Maine hunting moose and I have seen a coffee can with a shoe lace through the bottom. You wet the lace and pull on it like you were tryig to squeeze the water out with your thumb and forefinger. The resonace sounds pretty amazing.

We have a leather lace on our "can call" we use it at night, as a grunt call, to call moose in for the following day. It's incredibly loud, can be heard for miles.

John:

I was wondering if that lace can call works towards the end of the rut? I'll be hunting mid October and from what I understand the rut is pretty much over with the exception of a few immature bulls.

I also have to hunt third week of October, Calls still work, just not quite as well as they do in September.

As to pics of the call, sorry, it's at camp.
The loud call we use at night, is a can that's a little longer than usual. It's a can that a bottle of Baccardi rum comes in up here. It's about a foot long, and about three inches across. The shoe lace, is a piece of leather, and we soak it in water before use. Grip it tightly and give a short jerk on the string, forcing the wet leather to slide between your fingers. Some guys are better at using it than others. One of our guys can really make it squawk.

We have others made from Tomato juice cans. They also work, just not quite so loud.

Never measured it, just punched it with a nail, pushed the leather through, and knotted it on the inside.

I grunt as I walk through the woods.  Just a low grunt that sounds like a moose makes when he's walking around looking for cows for his harem.  Sometimes we pick up a sound stick and beat the willows or brush.  It works just be ready, when a bull comes in he's looking for a fight.  We often see the little guys run like mad, in the opposite direction.  They've already had the stuffins kicked out of them by the big boy.  It's funny to watch how they run.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I have used the old can call with excellent success, but just to add some more realism to the sound I take a 1 quart plastic oil can and cut the end off of it. Then when I get an answer to my can call I rub the oil can on some small brush. It sounds just like moose antlers on brush. That brings them in really fast.
