Dan Wesson Bobtail

I was thinking of picking up a commander sized 1911.

I like the features on the Dan Wesson and it seems to be reasonably priced.

Anybody have any experience with it?  Was it ready to go out of the box or did it need some tuning?

Rummer:  I have read they are solid, reliable and well made.  Those who have posted about theirs speak to their accuracy and reliability.  I do not recall reading or hearing about any problems with those pistols. Most 1911s are pretty much 'ready to go' right out of the box unless you are looking for one that meets some pretty high expectations. 

Some of the folks here have had soooo much experience with the 1911s in so many various types of activities - lawe enforcement, personal carry, match/target shooting, ISPC, etc., that their level of expectation is quite a bit higher than mine.  I look for something fairly basic and often make the mistake of trying to make a silk purse from a sow's ear.  Some of the fellas here look for absolute top of the line pistols that are soooo much more gooder and better than my expectations that I would almost be afraid to put my hands on one of their guns. 

One other thing to remember is that many handguns come, right from the box, in need of shooting or a breaking in period.  Many folks shoot their guns to break them in - some send them to a gunsmith to have them 'smithed' or 'smoothed'  until they are happy with them.  It's been a while since I took a new handgun right from the box, took it apart and cleaned it and then went to the range with about 500 rounds just to work any bugs out but you guys are giving me the 'itch' to do it again.  This usually means I need to go looking for a new gun.  Oh Boy.  Mikey.

Personally, I like the looks of a bobtail---and it does come with some obvious benefits in concealed carry.
I am much like Mikey---I wish you had not brought up the bobtail--been thinking about a commander and now this bobtail has got the slobber going again.

The commander size is my favorite in the 1911 platform. Much easier to carry, especially with the alloy frame, than the fullsize. I have a couple of commander size 1911s, both the all steel and lightweight. I find the 4" to shoot about as well as the fullsize, and to me it just balances better. I have not owned a Dan Wesson, but know a few that have. None of the owners had anything bad to say about them. I'd love to have a Bob Tail too-----------drat!!! If it's available with the alloy frame in .45 I just might pick one up someday.
Mikey, my last 3 or 4 pistols have been plastic, kinda gotten away from my upbringings. They were all boringly reliable during break in. I bet you have a few of the fantastic plastics laying around somewhere! Huh?

I bought mine in Jan. 08. I paid $899.00 I have put about 500 rounds down range with it. The more I shoot it the more I love this gun. I also find it very easy to carry. So far no problems at all. After researching I am came to the conclusion that this gun came with everything you would want in a 1911. I also figured everything it came with is the same things other guns are sent out to gunsmiths to have done to them.

And it sure looks good.

I first bought the Dan Wesson Patriot. I heard good things about it from a friend. I saw one slightly used at a gun show for $479. I bought it and it shot super. Then I was at a local dealer and found a Dan Wesson Patriot Bobtail. I decided I should have that one also. It was allittle more $749. It shoots just as good. These are quality guns. The dealer is a small dealer very friendly people. They were nice enough to hold it for me to scrape up the money. Glad I did it....The Bobtail (commander Size) is a nice size.

I love my BobTail named Berto. In case you did not know it, DW makes so few 1911s that they are basically handmade. Regards, Richard

I picked a CBOB up saturday.

I have only put 30 rounds thru it, but I like it.  It fits my hand a little better than my Springfield TRP.

My understanding is that these things either run out of the box or they have some problems.  I guess DW is having a hard time keeping up with demand.  I hope they don't start cutting corners.

How many rounds did you guys use to break yours in?

How often did you clean/relube?

I guess I'm a little late, but I bought one in 10mm about a month ago and I love it. I only have about 400 rds through it so far and it still needs some more break in. It cut my group sizeat least in half compared to my Glock 29 that I was shooting. The only complaint I have so far is that it throws my brass so far that I'm running about a 20% loss. While it certainly wasn't an inexpensive gun, it seems to be worth every penny of the asking price.

I think it is a sin to call a 1911 clone a Dan Wesson. Dan Wesson are revolvers to me. and always will be.. But I guess I am old fasion and out of Date! CZ USA makes the 1911 IMHO! as well as a number of great pistols! Companines bought, sold, consoldidated..tookover, etc.. loosing track of their roots.. soon we will have just some sort of Generic gun.
