Outside of the Hunley was sunk during the attack, which has been proven false, I had heard that the sub was on the surface with the hatches open to let air in waiting for the tide to change, when a wave swamped the sub.  This is the first that I have heard of the sub being sunk by a bullet through a port hole.  Interesting.  I cannot wait to hear their final findings.

Some state that the Hunley displayed a prearranged signal using a lantern after the attack . They feel that a wave could of swamped them while the hatch was open to give that signal . The glass was so they could navigate using the stars while submerged .
My favorite bit of Hunley history is the legend of the $20 dollar gold piece that Dixon carried after it had stopped a bullet at the battle of Shiloh , that was told and written about for years . The coin was a gift from his fiancee , inscribed and of course dented from the bullet . Guess what they found inside the Hunley ? Restores your faith in history .
