I was up at Back Creek Gunshop picking up powder today.  They have added fuse and quills to their inventory.

25 Feet of fuse was $3.  The quills...paper straws are .170 in diameter and 16 inches long. $3 for a bundle of 50

Hi All,

This may be old news but....FWIW...DO NOT count the length of fuse in the quill into your timing figures....if you use any {Timing Figures} as once the fuse reaches the quill and is deprived of air the rest is darn near instantaneous.

In the fireworks industry we call this "quickmatch".

Take Care,

Ken

I remember reading somewhere that "quick match" generally burns at about 100 feet per second...... a 3" piece would be gone reql quick.... like around 1/450 of a second if my calculator is correct.

Evil Dog,

Correct, quickmatch burns at approximately 100 fps when deprived of air, quickmatch just lying on the ground burns at approx. 3 fps, without any type of "coating".

FWIW if you are interested I can show you a rig to make your own quickmatch.

Huh?

Fill the quill with 4F. Stick it in the vent of your mortar.  Light your quill with a linstock.

What do you need quick match for?

You guys are doing something else aren't you.

Fill the quill with 4F. Stick it in the vent of your mortar. Light your quill with a linstock.

My experience with 4F in the touch hole is it acts like fuse, burning slowly.  It does burn through eventually but not quickly since the fire cannot get past the unburned powder.

Quick match is hollow and allows the fire to flash down the center to ignite the main charge virtually immediately.

In the FAQ section there are instructions on how to make your own paper quills.  They go off instantaneously.

Thanks For The Welcome Tim,

I may have just gotten lucky here with the discussion. I dealt with quickmatch in the manufacture of aerial display fireworks. I worked for a company with a contract for the Magic Castle at "Rat World" ;-) So we had to time shells and launches to a "T" as they were choreographed to music. So we had things down pretty well, Fuse, quickmatch or squib. Launch and Lift times, color and "supplemental displays" like whistlers, fizzers and such.

I'm still restoring my large lathe so my mortar and cannon pix will come later. Right now I just soak up the info.

But there seems to be a lot of misconceptions and folklore about BlackPowder, quickmatch, friction or friction sensitive primer delay or ignition.

I guess I spoke out of turn, not having lurked long enough, I didn't want to see someone expect 3 sec and get instant so I just Kinda mentioned something.

Now if you want a timing problem, let's talk Det Cord!!!

Ken

PS Does everyones submissions load real slow or do I have an incorrect setting?

Ah ha I knew you weren't just shooting golf balls out of your mortar!!

If you use you lathe for build cannons you can even talk to us about that. You might teach us something or we might be able to help.

There is no lurker probationary period...jump in anywhere anytime, and Welcome!!!

So far as I can tell, posting is a slow process here.  So slow that there are frequent timeouts, with the post sometimes not made but sometimes actually getting submitted, and the acknowledgement  not being returned to the poster.  So the poster hits enter again.  When you notice double posts, that is the likely scenario.

If you make a double post, you can delete the extra one, if no posts have been made after it, by clicking the X box in the upper right of the post.

Thanks Mr G,

I believe we've spoken before on a number of other forums, we've got a lot in common.

Yes, I "time out" frequently, and have done the "multiple post thing on another topic.

Again, thanks For The Info!

Take Care,

Ken
