Survivor 308 load development?
« on: February 12, 2006, 02:47:40 PM »
I started my load development on my 308 survivor. I am using Varget , Hornady 150 interlocks, CCI 250 mag primers, new Winchester brass. Started out at 45 grn moved up to 45.5 and got very slight primer flattening. Hit the 46grn loads and primers are flattened pretty badly. Recoil was not noticebly differant. The varget powder meters very good in my cheapo lee measure and it fills the case just right so I will keep using that. I read that BR 2 Primers are good for varget and 308 cart. are they a CCI product? I stopped right there. Max load is 47 grns. The primers have machining marks from the reciever in them. I know this to much but its so far below the max. Do you think the mag primers are to much? Do these NEF rifles do this frequently? These mag Primers have given me trouble with not firing in a couple of rifles already(this one included) so I will discontinue using them. It stinks cause I still Have about 500 left. Any other ideas  why the pressure is so high? accuracy was not bad with 1 to 1.5 inch gruop at 100 yards. Factory 150grn rem loads were giving slightly better groups 1 inch and under. If this is to much reloading for the NEF H&R section I am sorry.

Sincerely,

AL

I'm using 48 grs. of Rel.15 (compressed load) the primers show very little pressure, and it accurate in my 308. I dropped a bobcat at 213 yds.and the bullet hole was within 1/2" of the crosshairs. It make's one hole at 50 yds.and 1" high.  Digger

Al,
Your load may well be showing high pressure signals due to the mag primer--is this the primer listed in the book for the load you're using?

The load data is for the pressure barrel used to develop the data and is not to be construed as a load for every rifle (you probably already know this) so whenever you are developing a new load for your rifle it's best to approach max listed with caution; if you're getting excessive pressure signs you ought to back off the charge until they disappear.  Furthermore, a load that is on the edge of the envelope in the dead of winter could be well over max in the heat of summer.

for my Ultra .308 43.8grs of Varget on a Nosler BT 165gr gives MOA groups or 48grs on a 110gr Sierra HP Varminter. both with CCI 200 primers.

still working on a load for the 150grs BTFMJ/SP both Hornady interlok as well. 44grs on CCI 200s it's whats looking good for mine right now give it shot in your survivor.
what powder charge worked best for you, i'll load that with CCI 200s and i'll share how it grouped.

Accuracy was ok and got better with the higher load. I will have to drop back and punt usung CCI200 OR BR2 primers. I was off the tail gate of my truck also, so 1 to 1.5 inch at 100yards is not bad. I am sure I can get this rifle to shoot better than I can shoot it. I need to borrow a friends bench rest to really get serious. Walmart has a bench seat rest thingy for 150 bucks looks pretty good I might give that a try. Its called the Do All prairie Predetor Shooting Bench. Anyone seen it first hand ?

I recently read an article in one of the gun magiznes about handloading. They loaded up rounds changing nothing but primers and had velocity variations of 200 fps. If I can remember where I read it I will post it. I use CCI200 primers in my 22-250, 25-06, 308, 30-06, and 45-70 and am very pleased.
