.243 Sierra load question
« on: August 26, 2006, 02:42:22 AM »
I am lookin for the load information, including the OAL, for the Sierra 85 grain Gameking hollowpoint bullet using H4895 for my brandy new 243.

I have been working up a load with Nosler balistic tips using BL-C2 with good success, but a benchrest shooter has suggested trying the Sierra 85 grain as he has had "fantastic" success with this bullet. He was clear to state to use the Gameking and not the Matchking bullet.

So, I bot the powder and the bullets, but my Hodgdon manuel doesn't give me the OAL and powder range specifically for the 85 grain Sierra.

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Dave.

Dave,
According to my Serria manual, 4th. ed., starting load for (IMR) 4895, H4895 is not listed but if you start a grain or 2 below this suggested starting and stop a grn. or 2 below max. you will be safe. H4895 is number 99 on my burn rate chart and IMR 4895 is number 102, they are very close. Start load is 31.8 and max. load is 37.8 gns. Book AOL is 2.650 in., but with most factory rifles there is so much jump you usually get better accuracy loading them longer than recomanded. Becarefull not to seat them tight in the rifleings as this will jump your presure and could get dangerious. Talk to your BR shooting friend abt. seating depth as it more than we can get into here.

2.615" OAL. Source: 46th edition of Lyman's reloading manual.

The Sierra 85 hpbt is what my 243 shoots well at about 3100 fps. I was using IMR 3031, but the 243 or mine tends to build up copper at a fairly fast rate. I think IMR 4831 may be a better choice. Most 243's are deep throated so overall length would be governed by the ability to feed from the magazine. In my rifle a Parker-Hale sporter to be .010" off the lands with the 85 hpbt Sierra #1530 the col is 2.650". I no longer hunt anything but varmints with this gun so feeding is not an issue.

Hey Jim,

I noticed that you are shooting a P-H and said:-

Now I find this strange as the P-H has the full Mauser extractor so requires feeding from the magazine  ;) or have you modified the extractor to allow it to slip/jump over the rim into the groove?

Do you mind me asking which model P-H you have?
