cool program
« on: February 15, 2006, 05:00:48 PM »
I found a program that allows you to create animated gif images.  I decided to try it out on a new avatar.  It turned out pretty good.  I think IÂ’ll take if down I a few days.  I find animated avatars to be obnoxious and I donÂ’t want to slow things down here.

If any one is interested in creating their own you need a program called PolyView.  It can be downloaded for free.  You will also need a video program that allows you to capture frames.  Once the frames are captured you can link them together into one gif image using the “create animated gif” option.

Slightly off topic I admit but I think it is kind of cool.

I think it is annoying. Could you provide a link to that download, please.

The image file size is less than 22,000 bytes.  It shouldn't impact dialup users much.

The avatar and its duplicate in the post show the mortar repeatedly firing.  You may have some setting in your browser such that animated gifs are not shown as animated.

If you are using Internet Exploder (IE), click Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab.  Under the Multimedia heading, click "Play animations in web pages" to see the activity. Click Apply and OK and re-view the webpage with the animated gif.

Or if that doesn't work, get a copy of Mozilla or Firefox.

True enough if only one person on the thread has the animated avatar qnd they only make one post in the thread.  But if everyone in the thread has one and a cuople of pictures get posted also....well look for the GBO time out to hit you before the page loads.

I visit a Golf cart board everyonce  in a while that allows animated Avatars, and it is ugly....

Geo -  Thanks for the tip.  Mine was set that way and didn't work, but that's ok, it loads fast on dialup.

I find animated avatars extremely annoying.  One or two are ok but if everyone has one it gets distracting.  IÂ’ll probably take mine down in a couple of weeks.  I just thought it was neat.

It takes a while to get a good animation.  You first have to capture the frames from a video.  The frames must be saved as gif images and shrunk down to 95 by 95 pixels.  Other sizes work but the limit on the board is 95 by 95.  Then with PolyView you go to CREATE AMIMATED GIFS under the files menu.  From this you add the saved frames of your video and tweak it.  You can change the time for each frame and its position.  Each time you change something click BUILD to see how it changed.   To put it on the board you must upload it to a photo server.  This is the same as you would do for a regular picture.  You then go to profile in the GBO menu and paste the url of the picture in the “Link to off-site Avatar” box.  It should work.

It is not my intention for the board to become overrun with animated avatars.  Use this information for good not evil.
