Good all around bullet?
« on: February 13, 2006, 04:58:09 PM »
I am looking for a good 180 grain all around bullet for my 30-06.  It will be used on everything from woodchucks to elk.  Last year I used a 180 grain bullet for deer and elk and it worked fine, both one shot kills, but I want something with a little bit better ballistic coefficient, but still has to be somewhat affordable.  I was thinking about getting Sierra Gameking BTSP or Hornady Interlock BTSP.  I think these both run slightly under $20 for 100.

I am curious if anyone has had any experience with either of these two bullets or if you have another idea I haven't thought of.  Thanks.

Which 180 grain bullet did you use? Tryin' to get a better ballistic coefficient with a SHORTER bullet can be difficult.

"I was thinking about getting ..............Hornady Interlock BTSP."

That is a very good answer to your question. I have used the Hornady 180 gr BTSP in the '06 at 2700 & 2780 fps (21 & 24" barrel lengths) for quite a few years. The BC is very good and they are an accurate bullet with exceptional termanal ballistics. I have killed numerous deer, elk, caribou, a Rocky Mountain Bighorn, coyotes, rockchucks an numerous other varmints with them without fail.

I'm getting great accuracy out of my 300 RUM with the Nosler Accubonds.

Dang, until you made your second post, I was gonna suggest the Rem Core Lokt.
Why do you think you need to kill your animals deader?

I am one of those guys that is brand specific.  I have never had a problem with Remington bullets and I have thousands of them ready to be reloaded in the next room.  I also have thousands of Noslers and Sierras.  As in a couple of prior posts, is there such thing as deader?

Between these three companies, if one doesn't make it, the other does.  If I want a lot for a little less $, I can find that too.   For the -06 I can go with:

110 Sierra HP.  very explosive on varmints.
125 Nosler Ballistic Tip.  Fast and holds together fairly well.
150 Remington Core Lokt  deer/antelope
165 Nosler Partitions.  Big game hunting
165 Nosler Ballistic Tip  Deer size game/long distance
165 Remington Core Lokt  All around bullet.  (good accuracy out to 300)

These companies make some great 180s also.  With the -06, I did not go that high due to recoil.  Not a big deal deer hunting, but go shoot 100 rounds at squirrels or other vermin in one day.  Ouch.   When I want heavier bullets, I have other options in 7mm mag and 338.  If you don't, check out the Noslers.  Try the Nosler store for seconds.  They are cheaper, just as accurate, and if you get more for your $, you can shoot more.

Good Luck,

Steve   :D

I'd have to second the vote for the nosler accubond. I have not taken any game with them in my my 06 but have done so with other calibers.  Accurate and did a fine job on deer shot with them

Take a look at Speer bullets. I have had very good luck with them and find them very affordable. Look at the hot cors and the Boat tails.

I love it. Questions like this sorta prove that everyone likely makes good bullets. I'd try a bunch and use the one's that shoot best in that gun! :D

I just  hunt whitetails. The Siera 165 Game King has given me deer from 70 to 250 yds with no long tracks.
