Maybe try and train him to go down when you tell him.  I think they really do not like to do this and they seem to try and avoid it by doing the right thing. Or zigzag back to the truck so he does not realize that you are heading back?

What breed of dog and what kind of breeding? Sounds to me like you don't have a dog that's to intrested in hunting. An electric collar will probally be of little use. Your dog would just rather go home than hunt!

An electric collar won't make a good dog out of a bad one and a good dog doesn't need one.  I kinda agree with Don but one thought comes to mind is conditioning.  The dog is tired and ready to go home.
I would try, when he headed for the truck, to whoa him and turn 90 degs left or right and hunt a ways, then straightaway from the truck for a bit, then back toward the truck for a ways, then another 90.  Don't hunt straight back to the truck on any trip.

but an e collar will give you the capability to make instant corrections on your dog.   i dont know how i got along without mine.   one of the best dog accessories ever made.   i rarely have to correct my dog, usually the beep is all it takes to control him.

Shock collars are great.  My GSP was a different dog after one session with the collar.  I have had may wonderful years of hunting since I used it.  Everyone that goes out with me is impressed with him.  Before I had the collar he was not as focused.  After you use it once or twice, you will not need to actually shock the dog because they will listen.  You and your dog will be happier.
