great info site for H & R stuff. i just bought a .223 bull barrel in 1 in 12 twist. shot several loads, and not real impressed exept white box 45gr. since then, i've freefloated and did the o-ring trick. i was wondering if anyone has any suggestionsfor handloads in 40 gr. ballistic tip or 52 gr. BTHP match bullets. also was wondering if anyone has tried mounting a extra sling stud further back for a bipod, since i've read a bipod doesn't work well out in front. thanks, a newby

Welcome to the Forum, it really is a great site and I believe you will enjoy it as we all have.
I'll let others here step up and give you some load data.
On the other question, yes I mounted a stud close to the end of the forearm for my Bi-Pods, and it worked great for me.
If I could get the Search to work I could give you the link to my Thread.
But it's not working for me.
If you get it to work, look for ...Trying a new Bi-Pod method...It should give you some good ideas if you choose to try it.

I found it, but now it's not letting me even pull it up :evil: .
It's on page 20 at this time and it's about 1/4 the way down the page.
I mounted it very close to the Hinge area, about 1/2" I believe if memory serves me. It's so close that when I open my receiver I can't slip a card in between them :eek: :grin:

Is there an easy way to determine your rate of twist? I have a .223 HB on layaway and am currious. Thanks

NE Hunter:
Start a tight fitting patch in the bore. Mark the rod near the handle and at the breech. Now push the rod into the bore, while watching the mark you made near the handle, when the rod has made one full turn, make another mark on the rod at the breech. Now withdraw the rod, and measure the distance between the two marks you made at the breech. However many inches gives you the rate of twist--if it's 12 inches you've got a 1:12; 9 a 1:9.

just to update, i still was not getting the kind of groups i would like. i did the "super" clean, followed by the bore treatment/lapping with the j b and my groups with the 45 gr white box ammo has dropped to 1/2 to 3/4 inch at 100 yds. cannot believe what a help this site/info has been. would have been looking to trade out if not for the help. thanks

I havn't been reloading long but havn't found a load yet that is better than the Winchester 45gr. varmint round.
