Action comparison

Hey All,
I'm curious about the difference in accuracy between a semi-auto and bolt action.  I know that bolts are supposed to be superior but how much?
Also, what do I lose by using a 22" bbl vs. a 26"bbl?  .308 and .338 are both in my future--Remingtons or Brownings.  Thanks for the help. I hope its not too confusing, just trying to narrow things down! :?

For me there are simply too many things slam-banging around in a semi-auto.  But there are bolt guns that shoot poorly just as there are semi's that shoot very well.  On average, I'll take the bolt guns when accuracy is a concern.  The only semi's I own are my .22LR and handguns.  IMHO semi's are best suited to fighting and defense.  (I'm sure that will draw some fire!)

Figure a velocity loss of 20-40fps per inch.  A 4” reduction would therefore yield a reduction of 80-160fps.  Give or take.

.44splx2 - I have seen many a semi-auto outshoot bolt rilfes.  Both action types can be made to shoot accurately - just depends on whaycha want.

The 338 may well need a 26" bbl to maximize the cartridge efficiency - I would look at some of the ballistic tables out on that cartridge and see what length tube they used.  26" is a long tube to carry in deep woods.  The 308 - very popular with a 22" bbl and if yuou want to use it for woods work they usually handle very well.  HTH.  Mikey.
